Be Careful. There's a TON of horribly out-of-date advice on this thread.

First off, it depends on whether you have Google Analytics or other Google webmaster tools installed on your site. If you do, Google can track what people are doing once they're on your site.

This means, they'll rank your site based on how engaged people are. For example, how long they stay on your site, how many pages they visit, whether they scroll down to read your articles etc. This can be really bad if you're just starting out and haven't had enough traffic to optimize your site for maximum engagement and conversion. Creates a MAJOR chicken and egg problem.

This is why some of my highest ranking clients don't use Google webmaster tools or Analytics. Many of them even saw dramatic improvements in their ranking after they started using alternatives for tracking their user's behaviors.

So, how about without Analytics or webmaster tools installed?

Ironically, Google will then rank your site based on how good YOU are at getting traffic on your own. That is, until you actually get to Google page one and they can track how many people click on YOUR site instead of someone else's site. Again, chicken and egg problem, only MUCH more solvable this time.

If you focus on creating either 1) Interesting and relevant content OR 2) Invitations to download free stuff (without an opt in) etc, and you publish links to that stuff on other people's Blogs, on Forums and on Social Media Sites, and if people actually follow the links to your website, it will build up your traffic and believe me, Google has access to plenty of data about whether your site is getting traffic from other sites in their index.

If you do well with this, everything else will take care of itself.

As for building backlinks, it depends on whether your links are any "good." Ignore all this crap advice about follow and no follow. That never mattered. What matters is whether people are actually clicking the links and visiting your site. And yes, Google can track that behavior whether they're "no follow" or not.

Bottom line, the smartest thing to do is focus, not on building backlinks, but on creating and publishing content that people actually care enough about to click on the damn link in the first place. Ignore any advice about building backlinks just for the sake of building them. That's a quick way to get nowhere, at best, or, blacklisted as a spam site, at worst.
