There is obviously a way to get backlinks from reference.com if your competitor has them. That said, I spent a half hour looking for a single question on the site that had a backlink in the answer and never found one. The ads on the site sure do seem to be followed links, which is supposed to be against Google's webmaster rules.

I can't imagine Google gives much, if any, weight to links from this site. The questions seem like things small children would ask and the answers are very generic and simplistic.

Contact to the reference.com and ask them for link back.
