Some of you may have received an email from Lemonarian. This is the guts of it:
- perfect wheels don't work any more - G has caught on
- don't close your wheels (!?)
- mix up different sizes and shapes

Here is an example diagram:

which is similar to what I have been advising here:
The Link Juicer - Link Building Strategies

So, you can still get results with link wheels but you need to adapt your strategy.

  • I got the same e-mail. The only different is that he is doing is leaving one link out of the wheel - well, the main difference anyway.

How do you guys know this will work?
  • The two main differences are that the wheel is no longer closed, and that a plain simple wheel is not longer effective. The key difference between a link wheel and most other strategies is the lateral link. Most strategies simply create a variety of direct links, call them tier 1 links. Then bookmarks etc are added linking to tier 1 links, call them tier 2 links. Etc etc. Link wheels create an additional link laterally from one tier1 link to another. Now he is advocating more randomness in the whole structure. This certainly means wheels around the wheels, linking from tier1 to tier2 and vice versa, and just avoiding too perfect a formula.

As to whether it works, I have users who have been doing this for a few months now and they are reporting good success.

I don't have experience in this yet, but I strongly suspect that if you close the wheel in a roundabout way, forking and following various routes you will still be able to reuse the juice the way the original wheel did, without leaving a footprint.
  • help me with RSS directories, how to submit an RSS feed, and how to get a link out of RSs directories?

    • Are you referring to a way of linking to the link wheels / outer link wheels? I don't understand your question or how it relates to link wheels?

  • Hey guys! Are linkwheels still effective? Is it still effective to use your keyword as username? Thanks.

    • RayGun - The general understanding is that they work if they are setup correctly. You need to make sure you build the Web 2.0 properties correctly and that the outer wheel promotes them properly. We have noticed a increase in rank for the targeted keywords. Obviously the level of effect depends on the market niche.
