Blog commenting for links is junk.

Directory links depend on the directories. There are some good ones out there. Most are garbage.

If the directory is free it is probably garbage. If it is auto-approve, it is definitely garbage.

The paid directories are usually a lot better.

You need to understand the whole concept of why backlinks were used as a major part of the algorithm in the first place. They were factored in by Google because they were seen as "votes" from one website for another website. The thinking was, "Hey, there are a whole lot of websites out there telling their readers to go to this other website. That other website must be pretty important."

Then, people started spamming blogs and forums with totally irrelevant comment links and Google had to adjust its algorithm. In effect, they said, "Wait a minute. People can just go to this other website and insert their own links. These aren't really votes by the other website at all because anyone can go here and put links to their own website."

The same is true for directories where all you have to do is submit your site and you automatically get a link. For the most part, search engines know which directories give automatic links and which ones have some sort of editorial review process and not all websites are accepted.

Most reputable blogs and forums have nofollow links in place so even if you do manage to slide your link into a comment, those links do not pass any "juice". Even when they are followed links, Google has adjusted its algorithm and given little to no value to those links because they know that anyone can place them, that the website owner had nothing to do with deciding to place those links. In other words, they are not really endorsements of a website by another website.

Search engines are much "smarter" today than they were five years ago. This is why I continue to say that if you can place the link yourself, most of the time it is a worthless link. They may not catch all of the spammy, easy to place links immediately but eventually search engines discover them and sites that were getting a temporary boost from their link schemes, eventually fall in the rankings when those links are devalued (and then their owners end up on forums like this one crying "boo hoo").

Not necessarily. You might want to check the spam score of the directory submission site where you are creating a backlink. Moz is a great tool to check the spam score.

The best way to create quality backlinks is to reach out for guest posts on your niche relevant sites having good traffic and authority.

    Hope this helps!

If anyone can get a link on them easily then its junk. While if the blog comments are moderated or same goes for directory submission and they approve only the content that have credibility then they are worth.
else just use them for anchor text dilution.

Almost all blog comments are worthless links - at least for SEO. That doesn't mean that intelligent, well-placed ones can't bring you traffic if they are appropriate to the discussion.

Most directory links are also worthless for SEO. They are even worse for gaining quality traffic (when was the last time you went to some directory and clicked on a link?). Exceptions MIGHT be directories where some editorial review process is involved and not everyone with a website can get a link. Even in that case, they are hardly world class, powerful links.

If you can place the link yourself, it is almost always worthless (I need to exclude personal, private, non-public PBNs from this). The only links of real value are ones where another webmaster has to decide to place or allow a link to your site.

In some countries, you can rank with directory links. I think that the main factor for choosing a directory should be traffic. If it has good traffic, then it should be decent, regardless if it's paid or not. The paid ones are less spammed and that's why they are more sought after. Definitely, the best way is through guest posts in the same niche or other related niches. Problem is, guest posting takes a lot of work because you have to do prospecting, outreach, follow-up and you have to deliver a quality article that may or may not be published.
