Is there a legal issue with using a competitors name in links directed back to your site? I know they wouldn't like it, but could they sue? Pay per click lets you do it.

    If the name is trademarked you cannot use it in your Pay-Per-click ads, you can bid on the search term but you cannot use the trademarked term anywhere in your ad. The same would apply to backlinks.
