Let's say I am looking at widgets.

There are blue widgets, grey widgets, pink widgets, and purple widgets. All with good search volume and low ranking pages in the SERP's. Relatively easy to beat.

The widget phrase is overcrowded though. Too competitive by itself.

Domain wise what would be good to get?

If I get www.widget.com (is there a way to turn off automatic URL making in my posts?) I will never get to the top. Too competitive.

If I go with bluewidgets.com I will rank well for blue widgets but perhaps not so much for the others.

All the specific widget phrases have the same traffic and estimated payouts. About the same PR and backlinks too.

What would you do if anything with these widgets?

I would go after all of them. One website per widget, if it the traffic supports it.

You could become the widget king and dominate!

I am doing this with an interesting niche I have found. I have four sites right now and 6 domains to develop. The four sites are doing well. You can add backlinks after the sites are established and enjoy some link "love" of your own.

    Good luck!

I would buy a domain name per each widget keyword and then for each widget domain go for super targetted widget long tail keywords.

    For example;

    GreyWidgets.com

kws: cheap grey widgets, luxury grey widgets, bargain grey widgets, light grey widgets etc

Like sluggo said, you COULD potentially domniate this market.

    Best of luck

The problem with one web site per widget is that there isn't much traffic to each one. Say around 1500-2000 per month local search volume. Also the expected estimate payout from each one is pretty low. The other problem is that there are not many if any thematically similar keyphrases related to the very specific keyword phrase for each web site to allow me to easily build up site pages or articles.

So for example "blue widgets" and "grey widgets" could each be one site each well enough but there are no other phrases connected with "blue widgets" and "grey widgets" to allow me to flesh out the sites much if at all.

So the blue widget site and the grey widget site would each be just one page each. That looks pretty cheap and not in line with what Google might consider a worthwhile page to have Adsense on (though I know they are all over the place).

I want my adsense sites to have more long term value. That can only come about by making multi-page sites.

From how you have explained, it seems its better to create one site with the widgets term. This means the site could potentially become an authority, woo hoooo. For long-term success, its probably better to create 1 site. It may take a while but get the articles done and lots of quality backlinks and you should be well on your way.

    Good luck.
