SEO & Content Strat for 2 Sites .. Duplicate Content?

by jvon 6 replies
I have a client with 2 domains. They own gorgeous property on the coast of South America and are building a community there.

Domain 01:
This is their primary domain for the promoting the community and selling the land. They have the most personal investment and potential revenue in this project

Domain 02:
This domain will be for selling friends property for a commission, AND their own property: domain 02 will link back to the property pages for domain 01.

Both sites need to have blogs to boost their rankings for target keywords.

So the obvious issues with this strategy revolve around the fact that the two sites have similar subject matters - and are targeting a similar keyword space.

1) It's twice the work. As far as that goes its fine for me, because they're hiring me to plan and do most of the technical and content work for both sites ... however ...

2) Since the sites are targeting a similar keyword space, they are in danger of competing against each other - hence diluting the ranking power between the two sites ... and ...

3) If we want to reuse content between the two sites - how do we do that without getting a duplicate content penalty and tanking the rankings for both sites? Thanks

I'll handle #3. There is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty. Never has been but some "guru" said it once and everybody has repeated it ever since. Worst case scenario with duplicate content is that one site's page will get indexed and the other with the same exact content for the page won't. That's the "penalty".

Now, if the entire sites were duplicates of each other or the vast majority of each site was the same, that could be a problem. A few pages here and there won't be a problem.

I can't help but wonder why they need to be two separate sites in the first place, though.

You can divide keywords for both websites.
Ex. Real Estate Investment California and Investing California real estate and so on.
Use long tail keywords - How to invest in California real estate? Tips to consider before you invest in California real estate business. and so on.

Don't ever use the same content twice for second link building property. Either use new content / blog / description or spin the content in readable form to get better results. Don't leave any footprints.

    Hope, that helps.

    Good luck.

If you have duplicate content on another website you can use Google disavow tools to remove it.

Google disvow only remove links not the content if you dont own the second website you can just implement DMCA and apply for content removal request.

You could also insert a canonical tag in the head of duplicate pages and point to the other site's identical page as the one that you want indexed. Here's a very old Whiteboard Friday that talks about it - https://moz.com/blog/cross-domain-ca...teboard-friday
