Is it better to have a shopify store be on its own domain or is it better/the same to put it on a sub domain of an existing site?

thanks!

Any other, of course you would want it on its own website...

But in this case, it does not matter.

It's like asking, should I flush my wallet down the toilet, or burn it in the fireplace...

So putting a Shopify store on it's own domain and putting it on a subdomain is throwing money away either way?

Not sure what your saying, lot's of people make money with Shopify...

Nah, burning it in the fireplace produces beautiful flames you can admire for a while while having peaceful and/or deep thougths!

Thank you. Yes, of course it would be on my OWN domain, I was just wondering if it made a difference if I put it on a subdomain of my existing site or would it be better to buy a new domain name just for the shop, then I would have two sites.

I was wondering about things like analytics and how that would work on a subdomain since I've never used it before...stuff like that.

I think I'm going to end up with two sites.

Don't do this - a sub domain is different than getting a new domain. You will be really reducing the strength of your internal link flow by linking out to your store on a new domain. Link "juice" with Google degrades more linking to another domain rather than flowing to internal pages on the same domain.

Plus customers who notice the change in domains will be suspicious that they have been redirected to an illegitimate site - which often results in lost sales.

what about analytics? someone else has told me that google analytics is difficult to get to work correctly on a subdomain - also isn't a subdomain treated the same as a separate domain anyway?

why not just put the store in (or direct to) a sub folder? Is it running on its own server?

            eg Mysite.com/store

that's what I wanted to do but they said no (shopify) I guess for some reason you can only run it from its own domain or on a subdomain

Doesnt matters if you cannot make sales.
But its best to have a specific domain linked to your store to give a good feel to the users.

Having own domain than subdomain is better bet. Google prefers having own domain. The chances are increased of ranking o the first page.

Mike, once again, is absolutely right. It DOES matter if your existing domain has any power and authority. Putting it in a folder (subdirectory) will help it rank better if the main domain already ranks reasonably well. Subdomains are treated as completely separate websites, so no authority passes from one to the other.

Shopify is not the only eCommerce platform. It has its limitations and this is definitely one of many. If you do a search for "website store in subfolder" you will find various platforms where this is possible.

thanks guys, I guess I'll have to put it on it's own domain then, I'm already in a shopify class and started with the free trial of shopify so I don't want to start all over with another platform

it will never be absolutely perfect, I'll just dive in and succeed or crash and burn...if I fail there's always vodka...
