Stupid question about backlinks

I'm still working on figuring out this whole backlink thing and I have what may be a dumb question.

From reading all about Angela and Paul's links it seems pretty evident that if you can get a link from a site with high PR, even if it's on an inside page, it can give you a nice boost. Most of those links are www.highprpage.com/forum or whatever. Does it work the same if the link is forum.highprpage.com?

I'm wondering because I've found a PR8 .edu that has a forum for each of it's student groups and registration is open. That means that theoretically I could have links from club1.school.edu, club2.school.edu and so forth. Even though the club pages are 4-6 PR would it still count at higher because the main domain is a PR8?

BTW, before I get jumped on for spamming all of the groups, that's not my intention. There is a single one that I plan to join because I think I could offer good information. The way it was set up just got me thinking of how the PR juice would work.

PR is page specific, not site wide.

That's true...kind of. However, there is a lot of proof that exists that getting a link from an internal page, even if it has 0 PR, of a site that has a high PR can give you a lot of value.

It's 100 percent true. You're correct as well though, a link from an internal page of a high PR site can give you a lot of value. The reason is not the PR however, it's due to the site's authority. Although not directly related, typically you will see a correlation between high PR sites and high authority sites.

          Hi vagabondette,

Just as a side note your subject line caught my eye about this being a stupid question thread. May I suggest that you not start threads in the future that have to do with questions that might not be so smart (if indeed your question was...I didn't really look at your question)?

I don't personally believe there are any stupid questions. Maybe some not so well thought out but not stupid.

I've never understood people saying they have stupid or dumb questions and then asking them anyway. I mean that's just...I don't know...a bit silly. To have a question that is considered stupid and asking it anyway.

If your question is not stupid or dumb don't say it is.

          Just my two cents worth.

          Carlos

heh, no. But, I'm putting together a big list that will be part of a free WSO in a few months and it might be on there.
