SOC vs. 1st page google rank

Of the two, who can tell me which method works better, the competiveness of the first page in google as determined by the page rank or Strength of Competition as demonstrated via micro niche finder.

Using a keyword in the Beauty area there were good numbers - lots of niche possibilities. In checking the page rank in google for the first page, there were 7 spots that could be easily overtaken but then I remembered micro niche finder hadn't been checked first. Checking it gave me the red light with the competition being in the thousands.

Granted I was supposed to use micro niche first but what about all those lovely page one spots waiting to be overtaken?

I don't really pay much attention to PR when it comes to evaluating the Top 10 at Google. I use Micro Niche Finder and SOC really just helps me narrow the field. I don't use it by itself to determine a keyword's "conquerability." I go to Google, do the search, then look through the Top 10. If I see a lot of video or article pages, or a lot of inner pages and few or no TLD's, I'm probably good to go. If I do see a lot of Top Level Domains and authority sites in the Top 10, I pass. Don't overthink it.

      Hi John,

I've thought about this every time I read a reply to this question and figured I'd bring it up now.

I see a lot of folks offering their personal strategies for determining competition. Doesn't it really depend on how much you're planning to do to over take the top spots? Seasoned veterans like your self are probably going to do a lot more quality backlinking than less experienced folks who are asking the question.

I think the level of work necessary to conquer needs to be factored in. I'd like to see folks also offer how much backlinking they think would be necessary to overtake the top spot using their competition strategy. I realize this can not be done definitively, but an idea would be a good compliment to the competition question.

And I'm not referring to you specifically just in general observation. I'm new at this and have found I need to set my sights lower in order to rank high. My backlinking skills are not that good yet.

      Thanks,
      Phil
