Hi,

How much difference does the domain name ending make so SEO? Is there any difference in ranking for .com .net or .org?

And does having a dash in the title make any difference?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

  • It makes ZERO difference. Google's algorithm does not care what your domain name is. They do not care what your TLD is. The ONLY time it matters is if you are using a country-specific one.

    A dash does not matter, either, at least to search engines. It might matter a whole lot to another established website with the same name without the dash and they may or may not have legal grounds to sue you.

    Most important, you have to think about people who use the web. If you are looking for repeat business or referrals, are they going to remember the dash or head over to the site without it? Same goes for the TLD. You can emphasize .net or .org until the cows come home but when it comes time for people to remember your website, they will always remember it as a .com, once again heading over to a site that is likely to be your competitor.

    I'm looking at expired domain names and its a bit of a nightmare trying to figure out if the existing backlinks are spammy or not. I'm getting different results from different tools, even the paid ones. I'm, concerned that I could inadvertantly buy a domain name with spammy backlinks that I did not find and end up completely wasting my time!

    How much difference does using an expired domain make? Is the ranking weeks/months quicker?And do they rank a lot better, assuming that they have a good backlink profile?

      It's kinda hard to find all the existing backlinks of a specific domain. It's kind of a double-edged sword. You can check all the influential links through MOZ Pro and all the others through simple Google Search. Also, you can see the spam score for more information. I use expired domains to give links to my current website. When there is no links on the website and you only give do-follow links to one specific website, Google considers it more valuable.

    • You don't need a tool. Go to the site where the backlink is and look at it.

      Could you just go there yourself and place a link any time you want? If so, it is worthless.

      If the link is in an article, is it well written or a bunch of gibberish? If it is a crappy article, it is probably a crappy link.

      If your article looks fine, do the other ones on the site look as well written? If not, you've landed a link on a splog - also a bad link.

      Does the linking website have anything at all to do with your overall niche? If not, it might carry a little bit of weight but not as much as one written on a site that is related to yours.

      Does the website have a central theme or are the articles a mishmash of a little bit of unrelated everything. If it's a random hodgepodge, it's a splog and again, a cruddy link.

      If you look at a site, see it is related to yours and can tell that it is the type of site where you have to earn a link, that only links to good sites that help its visitors, you've got a good link.

      Yeah, I know, a tool that someone convinces you to spend money on sounds easier and everyone is always looking for the easy way out, but it'll never be as good as the tool that sits on top of your shoulders.

  • I have manually looked at some of the back links from some existing domains. Some of them were highly dubious, but we're not found by some of the ba link checking tools. It's been an eye opening experience.

    I might go for a new domain name, instead.

    How much longer does it take to rank a new domain vs an aged one? I'd be grateful to know your experience about this.

  • I think there is no difference.
  • I think .com is the best but i can't chose. So i used .net
  • there is not any difference in ranking of .com .org .net.
    .com is mostly preferred for commercial use. and if your site is about the organization you can go for .org.
  • get all of them! The more varied your backlink domain referrals are, the better. If you would want the best ones with heavier weights on Google, then go for edu and gov sites.
