Hi fello Warriors, I have a potential problem but unsure if it is an actual problem, shall explain.

I want to go for certain keywords which gets millions of views and also average a CPM of around $0.58, one keyword is 2.7 million per month.

My question is, would i earn more from adsense to cover the cost of the traffic of this many people, i am struggling to pay to keep my site online and worried it could wipe me out.

Thanks

Alex

It's doubtful you would even break even.

If you are paying for traffic and monetizing the page with AdSense, it is unlikely you will make a profit.

Hi Mike, i am mainy reffering to actual bandwidth of the visits, paying the server cost, will adsense earn more than the cost of the traffic that will visit the page, as in page views, not buying traffic, just cost of people visiting the page.

Thanks for the response, most kind of you.

Will give you an example to clarify.

Mario Games CPC £0.37 Volume 823,000

        Average clickthrough 0.5% = $940 or $1880.00 for 1 percent.

Wondering on cost of servers, would it be higher than the clickthrough rate average earnings.

Thanks all, really worried and cannot carry on till i know.

The CPC is the cost per click for AdWords advertisers. That is not how much you would make per click on an ad for AdSense. You would probably make more like $0.05 per click. Maybe not even that much.

If you are paying for each visitor, you are not going to be profitable with AdSense. You need to find other ways to generate traffic.

Honestly, AdSense is not all that great. Really depends on the niche. For something like you mentioned, "Mario Games", you probably are not going to get a very good click through rate. You also would probably never rank organically for a keyword like that.

I think i may be confusing multiple people, i am not buying traffic to this page, would all come through organic search, what i am trying to work out is....

If i was rank one for a keyword getting millions of searches a month, if the keyword was worth $0.50 on average CPC, would that earn enough through clickthrough to pay the CDN hosting cost for bandwidth, cost of servers. The site is currenly hosted on Amazon CDN.

I wont be buying traffic but each time someone visits it must cost x-amount to serve the page, MB's etc.

        Thanks

        Alex

Profitable has to do with number of times people click on an ad and the amount you get paid.

If a keyword pays $1 per click and you get 100 clicks a month, you're earning $100 a month.

If a keyword pays $25 per click and you get 4 clicks a month, you're earning $100 a month.

So, which of the two above is more profitable?

By the way, long ago, when I was doing adsense, I read that Google paid 65% of what the people paying Google paid... So, I thought, on average, I'd get 65% of the average cost... I ended up making 35% per click.

If you know stuff about mortgages or car insurance, they pay more than pasta recipes. But, if you can get more content on pasta to rank, there's a point at which pasta keywords make more sense.

The way to know which keywords to go for? Go to the keyword planner tool, do searches in different niches... take notes. No, you will not make $10 for a keyword that has an average of $10 but you will make 2 times more on that keyword per click than for keywords that have an average of $5 in the planner tool.

The keyword search is tricky thing to do. If you are using it for adsense then make sure that keyword will give you maximum result or traffic. Also what kind of visitor it will take to your website that is also very important. Sometime low search volume keywords gives you more leads than high search volume keywords.

This is tough. You cannot think of spending the amount and get good returns unless you are targeting something trending and is niche. This is the rarest of the combination, but if found, you will get richer in no time.

Hi Hnrindani, currently not spending any money, only on the cost to serve the page, all traffic will be organic, just wondering if i get rank 1 for a popular keyword, whether the income would be higher than the cost to serve that page to each person who visits that page.

In that case, yes income would be higher than the cost to serve that page.

It is best to use low-frequency and mid-frequency requests. On high-frequency queries you will not earn much

The reason you are not really getting the answers you are seeking is because the question is not one that can be answered with any accuracy.

You can calculate your server bandwidth requirements, simply multiply your web page size (or you expected web pages per visit) by the amount of expected visitors.

Now you have a server cost.

Unfortunately calculating income is far more difficult as there are just too many variables and unknowns.

Firstly you cannot assume free traffic. To get organic traffic you will need to invest a lot of money or a lot of time. Especially for any kind of keyword that has any reasonable CPC and high search volume. In general the more valuable the keyword the harder (and more costly) it is to rank.

From the little information you have given I suspect that you are seriously underestimating what it takes to generate 2.7 million visitors to your web site

To understand overall profitability you need be able to forecast profit. Therefore you must know your spend and your income over a specific time period. Often this can only be done by actually trying and testing. Theoretical numbers will never be accurate and often theoretical campaigns will be right (or profitable) maybe only 1 in 3 attempts.

Keyword are not just keywords. They are more than the CPC/search volume etc. (others have explained how to calculate value using cpc/search - very rough estimate at best).

You need to try and understand what the searcher is actually looking for when they type into the Google search (user intent). In your example Mario Games is just a keyword. What will the searcher actually type in? Maybe...

Where to buy cheap Mario games (wishes to purchase)
List of Mario games (looking for free information)
How to win Mario games (looking for information and may be willing to pay)

Consider the 'intent' of each of the above searches, which are very different, but will all trigger ads for your keyword.

So first, you should try and make your keyword longer and more focused

    i.e.

    Cheap Mario Games
    List Mario Games
    Win Mario games.

These will all have less searches but will be easier to rank for and you will know what the searchers are looking for.

You can now also see why AdSense may not be the best way to monetise broad keywords. The ads that get shown will not be targeted to the actual searchers requirements. So Mario Games ads may only be relevant to a small percentage of searchers specific requirements. Which means they don't get clicked.

Targeting longer tail keywords will improve your ad clicks.
By that I mean write you web pages with the user intent in mind

All the above and probably a lot more will vary your AdSense earnings and that makes it impossible to say if you will make a profit.

You need to make an educated guess, and then go for it,. Only testing or doing will actually tell you if it will be a success.

The key point is that you need to work to make your traffic more 'profitable'. This is an ongoing process of testing. This is the only way you will start to make your income bigger than your outgoings.

In most successful businesses I would guess that server costs are a relatively minor expense and you would be looking to do much better than just earn more than your server costs.

My best suggestion would be to move your web site onto a shared hosting account that has cheap monthly unlimited bandwidth account.

If you are successful then upgrade to a server when the traffic increases and you know your numbers.
