Why the obsession with guest posting?

People are obsessed with guest posting because its the easiest way to get quality links for free. And as links are counted as ranking factor which not to mention isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

It's an easy way to get links and also puts your content in front of other people's audiences, potentially gaining customers for you.

Actually, most of the time, they do take into account quality: they never intend to get you great quality guest posts.

I get people asking about guest posts. At best, it's fluff written in correct English and having correct punctuation. At worst, it's so bad I could go down the street, ask the 1st 8-year old to write me something on the topic and it would be better.

As people have already said, it's an easy way.

And, unfortunately, people assume easy to produce equals easy to get good results.

Don't be afraid to display your expertise on other people's blogs, their followers will eventually become your followers if you only share your best content everywhere.

You only have one opportunity to make a good first impression.

The traffic and backlink will be worth it.

Here's my rules for filtering prospects when I am looking to pitch a guest post to a new site:

1 - Is the site in my niche?
2 - Does it have real traffic from Google organic search results?
3 - Do they have an active social media following to share my content with?
4 - Does it appear in the top 3 pages in Google for keywords related to ones I rank for?
5 - Do they have strict editorial guidelines?

If I am working on a local account, I would also have a preference towards local sites in the same market.

As to why it is so popular right now, I have seen firsthand results where a single link on an authoritative and relevant site has increased ranking visibility according to SEMrush by 3-5%. I didn't believe it at first, so I watched closely and didn't do anything else to the site for a month before submitting a 2nd guest post. Same results.

But you're not going to get results like that submitting sub-par content to the first email spammer that sends you "my list of available sites to help rocket your SEO results now".

Research real sites and write good content.

Guest posting is hot because it's very effective.

Depending on the niches you are working with, there are still a lot of people gravitating to reading articles when looking for information they need. Because of this, a lot of companies are trying to get in front of their potential customers by writing articles.

I agree with you, rmkidd85, having great content on your website is always preferred because people reading it start associating quality with your name instead of other blogs.

However, I believe that actual quality of content is determined by the market, not writers. Doesn't matter if your article or video contains cutting edge info that would guarantee all the children in third world countries are well fed. If your readers are not interested in it, it's not a quality content.

Therefore, you absolutely need traffic to your content in order for it to serve you any good.

The benefit of placing your content on blogs owned by other people is the possibility to tap into already existing traffic going to those blogs. Unless your website is already attracting plenty of people to it, choosing to post your work somewhere else will get you more exposure.

The problem isn't guest posting. The problem is guest posting on sites that advertise to the public they'll give a followed link for guest posting.

The best links for passing a manual review are on same/similar niche sites.
