Why the obsession with guest posting?

I've been link building for a while and focus on content + outreach. I've lost count of all the potential clients and even agencies who I approach that just ask what sites I've got straight away for guest posts. I'm not against guest posting but it gets me down how many people put all their eggs in that basket. One thing, it's so saturated that I think Google are just going to start either penalising sites who offer too many guest posts or use them.

It's also not taking into account that if it's really good content, there's a chance of the content itself gaining links. Why would you want this good content to be on someone else's site?

Building links through content and outreach is not difficult and it's the only real way to protect your site from future algorithm changes.

People are obsessed with guest posting because its the easiest way to get quality links for free. And as links are counted as ranking factor which not to mention isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

It's an easy way to get links and also puts your content in front of other people's audiences, potentially gaining customers for you.

Actually, most of the time, they do take into account quality: they never intend to get you great quality guest posts.

I get people asking about guest posts. At best, it's fluff written in correct English and having correct punctuation. At worst, it's so bad I could go down the street, ask the 1st 8-year old to write me something on the topic and it would be better.

As people have already said, it's an easy way.

And, unfortunately, people assume easy to produce equals easy to get good results.

Guest posts usually end up being a lonely page (no backlinks to it), so very little juice to pass on. Quite often, there's a mismatch as far as audiences go too, so no benefit there, either.

You may have also noticed that many people (who don't know SEO) taut it as a great way to get quality backlinks.

Actually Google has been understood that SEOs are taking too much backlinks from guest postings. That's why it is taking it negative. Keep that factor in your mind that while performing guest posting task, don't give link to general keywords is all posts. Adopt that strategy to create hyperlinks 50% on general keywords (your targeted) and 50% on brand names. Google will never catch it.

Used effectively, a guest post is related to the content on your site - it is well written and full of interesting information - the link for the author is to a site that complements your own site.

If the site is low quality OR the guest post is low quality - no point to it at all.

Putting your badly written guest posts on someone else's low quality site doesn't help you. Likewise, you can't attract quality writers to give you good content as a guest post for YOUR site if your site is new, not ranked, no visitors, etc.

Like any method that has worked well online - guest posting has been overdone to the point of not working for many who try it.

  • If I am guest posting on other authority blogs in my niche, I wouldn't mind posting my best content on their blog, because it gives me more credibility in that niche and it sends high quality backlinks to my websites.

Don't be afraid to display your expertise on other people's blogs, their followers will eventually become your followers if you only share your best content everywhere.

You only have one opportunity to make a good first impression.

    Good content = $$$ eventually.

Guest posting is great for many reasons. As others have mentioned, it gives you a backlink plus potential traffic from the blog. Of course, if you offer low-quality content as a guest post, then you won't benefit much from it.

As with virtually all methods, quality and doing things right is key. If you have low-quality content, post on non-relevant/low-quality blogs, of course your results won't be as good.

Think of radio hosts. They want their programs to be syndicated to other markets, right? Well, you want the content on your blog to be "syndicated" and read by as many people as possible, not just those who find their way to your blog. You don't necessarily have to write original content to be used as a guest post. Post good content on your blog, then offer the article as a guest post on high-quality blogs in your niche. Their readers can become your readers. Of course, if you find a highly trafficked website in your market then it can often be beneficial to write an original article if their guest posting requirements mandate it. The traffic and backlink will be worth it.

I know people do it because they agree with you, but that's not what happens. In real life, most of the time it gets you backlinks from pages that have little, if any, juice to pass on.

Not all guest posts are created equal.

Here's my rules for filtering prospects when I am looking to pitch a guest post to a new site:

1 - Is the site in my niche?
2 - Does it have real traffic from Google organic search results?
3 - Do they have an active social media following to share my content with?
4 - Does it appear in the top 3 pages in Google for keywords related to ones I rank for?
5 - Do they have strict editorial guidelines?

If I am working on a local account, I would also have a preference towards local sites in the same market.

As to why it is so popular right now, I have seen firsthand results where a single link on an authoritative and relevant site has increased ranking visibility according to SEMrush by 3-5%. I didn't believe it at first, so I watched closely and didn't do anything else to the site for a month before submitting a 2nd guest post. Same results.

But you're not going to get results like that submitting sub-par content to the first email spammer that sends you "my list of available sites to help rocket your SEO results now".

Research real sites and write good content.

Guest posting is hot because it's very effective.

Depending on the niches you are working with, there are still a lot of people gravitating to reading articles when looking for information they need. Because of this, a lot of companies are trying to get in front of their potential customers by writing articles.

I agree with you, rmkidd85, having great content on your website is always preferred because people reading it start associating quality with your name instead of other blogs.

However, I believe that actual quality of content is determined by the market, not writers. Doesn't matter if your article or video contains cutting edge info that would guarantee all the children in third world countries are well fed. If your readers are not interested in it, it's not a quality content.

Therefore, you absolutely need traffic to your content in order for it to serve you any good.

The benefit of placing your content on blogs owned by other people is the possibility to tap into already existing traffic going to those blogs. Unless your website is already attracting plenty of people to it, choosing to post your work somewhere else will get you more exposure.

I hope this gives you a little different perspective on things.

Good luck and enjoy the process.

The problem isn't guest posting. The problem is guest posting on sites that advertise to the public they'll give a followed link for guest posting.

The best links for passing a manual review are on same/similar niche sites.
