Keyword optimization might not be something you want to do, because it can be a hassle to go through it. However, it is something you will eventually have to come to if you want to rank high on search engines.

Using keyword optimization strategies is not necessarily a hard thing to do, but for the average newbie, it can be quite confusing.

What is a keyword?

What we generalize under the term "keyword" is a "word" or a "phrase" that is SPECIFIC about a product.

For example, if you are selling 'cell phones' any words that would be specific to the cell phones you are selling such as "blackberry", or "i576" or "touchscreen" would be a keyword for you to use. Any group of words such as "latest touchscreen blackberry" would be a keyword phrase.

The more your keywords are specific, the better chance you will have to be found on the internet.

To keep stay within our example here; if you were to sell cell phones and use only the words "cell phones" as a keyword, this would be WAY to broad, and nobody would find you.

Nowadays, people who are looking for a product are very specific in their search. Not only they would include the band of the phone they are looking for, but they would probably include the type, model and every detail they may already know or looking for about the phone.

A detailed keyword search
will find a detailed keyword phrase. This is What we call a long tail keyword phrase, which is meant to reach specif customers who are pretty much ready to buy.

Tip:
when you write an article for article directories online, do not use your keywords ever other sentences. This would be considered "spam" by article directories. The rule of thumb is no more than 1 keyword (or keyword phrase) per every 100 words.

You may still be a bit confused about keywords, but that is all there is to it. Finding the best and most specific keywords possible for you product, to be found when people are looking for what you have.

Just remember to be "keyword conscious" for whatever site you are writing into.

    • Thank you, I know, you're right, but I decided to write this as a gift for the newbies on the forum here

  • That's half the picture, but leaves out important off-page SEO factors. You can rank for lots of longtail keywords with just the on-page SEO you mention, but for any term that has even a little bit of competition, you need backlinks that are optimized with that same keyword as anchor text. Do both (your on-page advice + SEO backlinks) and you're all but assured of scoring lots of Top 10 rankings for longtails (and even some shorttails).

  • Watch this....

    monkey foot jibber jabber spoon

Check that phrase in Google in a few minutes/hours. It'll rank #1. It's easy to get any old phrase ranked. Whole 'nother kettle of fish to get a popular phrase ranked.

  • so you are in the 1% keyword density camp? I have heard from 1-4%
  • On-page KW density is almost irrelevant nowadays. What matters a whole lot more is off-page KW anchor text in your backlinks. You can get a page ranked for a phrase that doesn't appear anywhere on the page or even in the title or meta tags with a good backlinking program.
