Mostly, your brain should be the best tool that exists. Tools do a whole lot of guessing based on models that work a lot of the time but not all of the time. A good SEO can do that far better than any tool. He/she can look at a web page and modify it for better SEO, can look at a backlink profile and see where things need to be improved, can look at the sites on page one for any given keyword and tell whether there is a good ROI on trying to rank for it, can find the sites that clearly link to other sites and create content that is extremely likely to get a link from those other sites.

But, if you really need a tool to help you, one of the best ones out there that seldom gets mentioned is CanIRank.

It appears many of the major SEO tools are mentioned above and most are great tools. But I feel the need to add my two-cents:

Not Mentioned? Screaming Frog (SF) is a great "technical SEO" tool. It's free if your site is less than 500 pages. By technical I am referring to your Page titles, Meta descriptions, H1, H2 tags, et cetera. SF crawls your site and responds with all of your info in spreadsheet format that makes the data easy to review. You can export the data and save it. It checks lengths, canonicals and canonicalized URi, images, alt tags, and more. Nice to know that your canonicals are pointing where you intend them to point.
SF builds up-to-date sitemaps and gives you a chance to edit out pages that you do not want in there. Lots of free sitemap.xml programs out there but many of them are not up-to-date in their format.
You can also crawl your competition's site and see it there is something that you can do better (or not).
I used SEMrush (SR) and loved it until GoDaddy blocked the SR crawler which took out a large block of what SR did. Great thing with SR it is month-to-month so when GD blocked the crawler I called SR and they stopped my subscription immediately. SR also has a wonderful support team that responds to your questions quickly.

Google Search Console (formerly known as Google Web Tools) is mentioned in every response above. Great place to check your robot.txt and sitemap.xml functions. You can also submit your sitemaps here. Plus there is tons of keyword info, ranking info, CTR, and your site's performance reported here.
You can submit your new or updated pages in GSC and "request" a Googlebot crawl.
Oh yeah, and GSC also picks up any HTML improvements that Googlebot stumbled over.

Bing Webmaster (Bing Web Tools) does much of the things that GSC does but in a little different format. VERY USEFUL. Also lets you submit and update your Bing Places business ad (free). Easily see how your pages are doing, which pages are getting activity, and how things are performing in relation to the last period. Great info.
Like GSC, you can submit your sitemap.xml. Submit new/updated pages and request a Bingbot crawl.

Google Analytics: I think this was mentioned by everyone above. See where your visitors land (pages) where they go, how long they stay on each page. Plus advanced info if you have an online store (I do not).

Siteliner: Free (monthly check of 200/250 pages)to check dupe content/pages, broken links, inbound links, broken links and some other need-to-know info. Also how do you compare to like and similar sites. Produces some great reports that you can save and work as your workload permits.

Google Page Speed insight (GPS) (mentioned by everyone): Must use tool (in my opinion). If your pages are image heavy then GPS will tell you immediately that you need to work those images with TinyPNG or one of the other dozen or so free programs that will lighten the images to help increase your page speed. GPS also informs you if you might be able to speed things up by tinkering with your CSS, HTML, and a few other items.

In closing, there are some great YouTube videos out there on how to use these tools and get the most out of them.

    A Little Help Here!

I'm glad to see so many people responded to your question - and some very good tools suggested - BUT, Hey, your question can't really be answered without a little help from you.

The tools YOU need depend and what you are doing or trying to accomplish. You wouldn't walk into Harbor Freight and ask what are the most essential tools to have... would you?

The answers already given are just going to overwhelm you, and many of those tools will not apply to your needs.

So please, tell us what you are doing so we can recommend the best tools for you!!
