What are the best tool to check for backlink value?

Hi everyone,

We came across a backlink exchange offer from directory site with millions of visitors per month, however, when we use MOZ plugin to check its domain info, it has an alarming spam score. We used to solely reply on Google Pagerank to determine if it is a website we'd like to receive backlink from. Our questions:

1. a high ranking domain with spam score but millions of visitors, should we exchange backlink?

2. what are most important metrics to judge a backlink and domain value in 2017?

3. please recommend us some tools that you use to see these metrics.

Thank you.

Jay

If it is a link exchange, it doesn't benefit you for organic rankings anyway so whatever parameter you may have thought worked (PR, DA, TS, Spam Score) doesn't matter if you are both linking to each other.

Therefore, the only thing that should matter is whether you think that website's traffic (and the page they are putting it on) will actually send relevant visitors to your website, since there is no SEO benefit. The only tool you need for that is your brain.

Would you say outreach is the best way to SEO for 2018 and beyond?
Or do you have any other recommendations?

Outreach has been the only valid way of getting a backlink of any value for at least the last three years and will continue to be the only valid way (other than setting up a true PBN, perhaps).

The only reason Google factored backlinks into their algorithm is that they were seen as "votes" by another totally unrelated website for your website. If another website is telling its site visitors, "leave my site and go check this out" that is a pretty powerful statement.

Algorithm filters like Penguin were created in the hopes of filtering out links that were not editorially placed. A link that someone can place, themselves, on someone else's website is not the same as a link the other website decided to place all on its own.

So, it's really all about creating content that other websites will want to link to and letting the sites that are known to link to other websites know about that content.

Agreed with dave_hermansen. First and foremost you need to evaluate yourself if this directory website is any relevant to your website theme. If the answer is yes, you might try that out and see how it goes.

Link exchange is obviously a manipulation method in which Google is already aware of. SEO is now for the users first then for the search engine in which they will provide your helpful content page for the target audience.
