More number of pages indexed than exist ?

This is a discussion on indexing. Imagine a website which has about 40 articles published till date. If you check the Google Webmaster Tool you will find that the number of pages that have been crawled are very high then the total number of pages that actually exist. So for a website with 40 articles you see 200 pages crawled.

Does this mean that it is due to the way the website is setup the pages are being considered different and crawled individually. Example

https://example.com/SEO/how-to-use-canonicals &
https://example.com/AuthorName/how-to-use-canonicals

If this is true then is it good idea to keep the structure like this (Access content via multiple URL structures, or should this be changed and limited only to one structure.

I am assuming that this website has canonical links in place.
