Hey,

I am very new to the world of SEO. I am adding my new online business to the top directories. Do i just add my business name, or do I add keywords.....if I add keywords do I add the same keyword to each directory or mix them up?

Advice please!

You add your relevant business information: Name, website URL, phone number, address, what you do, etc.

I would not worry about keywords.

You can use them in the description, but I would not go overboard with it. It's not going to make a huge difference.

The strategy I use with directories is I am just trying to strengthen the authority of a home page, which then will let me rank internal pages easier.

Directories are not going to give you much, if any, SEO boost so like Mike said, just keep it simple and informative. Keywords won't matter at all. They round out a link profile if on relevant directories that are actually used and that have editorial oversight in deciding whether or not your link will appear.

Some people talk about the only benefit of a directory link being traffic but I can't believe they help with that, either (except for local directories and brick and mortar businesses). I'm not sure if I have ever visited a directory of any kind and clicked on a link to a website.
