I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Do backlinks from unrelated sites help your SEO? I'm referring to natural backlinks that have traffic, not link spamming or link building tactics. But backlinks coming from decent quality sites that were created by real people.

Is a link a link? Does an unrelated link carry any weight?

For example, if a parenting blog linked to a science blog, does it help?

Yes of course it does. Like you said a link is a link. Of course, links from related websites carry more weight everything else being equal.

Backlinks from appropriate SEO sites might help you much better in the Search Engine Ranking, but unrelated sites doesn't give more effect as of that.

Any backlink from unrelated sites will result in improvisation of SEO, if it turns out as a call to action. Until that it would be a backlink among all those backlinks.

At time you may get penalized for unrelated sites i recommend only targeting the right content site which relate to your content on your website.

Yes links from unrelated sites carry weightage but as much as from related sites. When we create back links on Web 2.0 or High DA/RD/TF websites for various niches, practically its not possible for us to maintain 100s of websites for 100s of Niches but YES, creating backlinks from such sites help your ranking boost up.

    Good luck.

Yes, but disavow a link if it has high spam score.

Why an "unrelated" site mght have backlinked your site if there's nothing in common?

That is whats google crawler think. And of course if there are lots of them and more than related, it sounds spammy.

Backlinks from not appropriate site doesn't give you much result as compare to relevant sites. But they also contribute little a bit.

But how can you post your link in irrelevant content or websites? Would it make any sense to the user to make flip them into different topic while they are looking for some valuable information?

It might be help only for getting backlink purpose but not good for user experience. Sometime this strategy will get affect when Google update it's Penguin Algorithm in future.

The quality of link juice is more important than the quantity. If there are too many irrelevant backlinks to your domain, it may hurt your good SEO efforts.
May be depending on the quality and domain authority of the domain may help you to increase your number of backlinks but, having a link from completely unrelated domain won't be as valuable as a link from a related site.

They may not hurt your site, maybe the linking site, but they won't help (much, if anything). It may help with getting crawled the first time, but beyond that they are worthless. Sorry.

Backlinks from unrelated sites DO improve your SEO.
But of course it's less effective than the backlinks from appropriate sites.
Backlink from appropriate sites are more friendly with the search engine optimization.
For me, I always recommend backlinks from appropriate sites.

    Hi trade4861,

As long as you are getting a link from a website which has high DA&PA and a low spam score, you should not worry.
But try to create more links within your niche also. It will help you in gaining traffic and leads.

    Regards
