Google And Affiliate Links

If I'm building a large content site (600 to 800 pages of completely unique content) and want to link out to an affiliate product from each page will that hurt my PR and traffic? I've been reading about this today and apparently I have to use no-follows and redirects and blah blah blah....

Do I really have to do all that cloaking? With all the PhDs Google has on the payroll would it even work? What if I linked all my pages to a page on my site that had a review of the product with an aff link at the bottom?

    • I've just recently seen a Google rep supposedly suggest no follows should be used on affiliate links. At least that's how people in this article are reading it.

Linking To Affiliates? Better Nofollow Those Links or Google Will Penalize You

I'm not positive this is the case and have not read anywhere else that Google has officially said affiliate links need to be no follow - but they are Google so def could consider aff links, paid links, I just have not seen it mentioned anywhere officially.

You can use .htaccess for redirecting and cloaking affiliate links. This also helps increase click through rates.

Instead of having a long ugly link that looks like linktrackerurl.com/affid/?rekj4iu34jmnfljk. You would have a link that looks like yoursite.com/product or yoursite.com/keyword

Here's an article about how to do it:

"You can do it with wp smart links plugin."

That only works if it's a Wordpress blog. I think you said you have a content site.
  • Yes, smart links is a life saver, especially for SEO.
