What to dow hen your site stops at #5?

Hi, i have been working on my small business sites SEO for about a year and things going well, i'm on the first page for my main keyword. Its long tail, just for my city.
Anyway, it has stopped at Google rank No 5-6, sitting behind the big guys (who obviously spend big bucks on SEO ) and a couple directory sites.

So what can i do to get past them to No 1? What do you guys do in this case? Without risking being whacked by Google. Thanks for any advice.

    if you don't want to risk to get wacked by google then there is nothing you can do asides from tweaking your internal linking structure aka your site architecture

    BUT

    building good quality links aka from reputable sites within your niche slowly over time is going to help you get out there slowly

    this is a general talk as without knowing the exact specifics of the keyword you rank on and the comp...well that's all there is to it

    It seems that you cannot out perform your current competitors in the first page. Try to track their footprints be analyzing its backlinks then think of the best strategy to overcome those implemented tactics from the competitors.
