SEO Timeframe

I am looking to optimize a brand new site for a set of keywords that have 38,000 competing pages in the Google SERP, the best of which is a myspace page with PR0.

If I optimized on and off-page, how long can I expect to wait to actually rank for those keywords in Google?

  • Competing against on 30,000 other sites you should be able to be #1 in less then a month with very little work.
  • What is the niche and keyword?

I ask because it depends largely on those two factors, as you already said this is a brand new website.

If it's in the insurance niche, even for lesser keywords, you might need 1000 backlinks, if it's for a local\regional niche, you might need 100 backlinks. I woudl recommend checking out yahoo site explorer and majestic SEO and trying to get an idea of how many links the top sites have. Don't go off of the page rank like you did with the myspace result.

My advice would be to not worry to much about how long it takes. If you know your website converts, then start doing SEO. Get the site up with some good content, and start doing link building.
