Choice of URL for SEO

For SEO rankings, all else equal, which of the following would you choose?

Domain A Attributes:
- Shorter Domain Name (7 characters, contains first two words of the company name separated by a hyphen, would make a good branded link shortener)
- Domain Age: 20 years
- Backlinks: just over 100 (from 40 unique TLDs, all pointed to the home page)

Domain B Attributes:
- Longer Domain Name (17 characters, spells out the company name)
- Domain Age: 11 years
- Backlinks: 3 (from two TLDs, look spammy)

These are not recently purchased domains. Same owner since original purchase.

    Hi,
    in my humble opinion I would probably go for
    Domain A more TLD links and the age of the domain.


    The only thing that I think domain B scores more highly in
    is not having a hyphenated domain name.


    If you are thinking of purchasing one of these you could
    check on sites such as Alexa to see how much traffic each
    domain is getting and if they have a Google page rank.


    Try and find out how much traffic each domain is getting.

      Thanks, GED. What was interesting about these two domains is that Domain A was iframed to show the content from Domain B. Yet, Domain A had all the backlinks. I came to this project fresh and don't know exactly what all the previous webmaster was thinking.

        The point I was trying to make is that the age of a domain is not at all part of Google's algorithm. They have said so on numerous occasions. A website that is one week old stands just as good a chance of ranking well as one that is 30 years old, all other things being equal (which would rarely be the case with a 30 year old website).

        The reason people think that aged domains are better is that they appear to do better. It is a correlation based upon years worth of content and/or backlinks that aged domains have. If it was simply a parked domain for 30 years that had no content and no backlinks ever, it may actually be worse than a brand new domain name.

    The one with the most backlinks, assuming they are high quality relevant links. The domain name, itself, does not matter at all and neither does the age of the domain.

      Thanks for confirming. I figured that the domain age wouldn't matter as much, given they are both pretty old (10 years+). The backlinks are generally of good quality.
