I would say that quality content is determined on measurable factors. time on page - use a stop watch,and have several people read through your page to get an idea of how much time it takes to read 100% of your content. Bounce rate. This one os a bit tricky.. you can only see the action ( the bounce ). Again I would say that only the bounces that occur on say Google Search are the ones that matter most. ( you can actually figure this out using your data logs and some decent coding in excel )

Layout... I would say to some extent this is a biggy. Google looks at a page in segments. ( Header, Body, side bar, footer ) Bing does the same thing, but thier segments are far more fragmented ( Header, upper body, mid body, lower body, etc ) So layout is obviously important. Layout in terms of readability, very important... is the text all crammed together, is it layed out with solid headers and sub headers? can you scan through the page to get to a pice of information you are most interested in? Is there so many graphics on the page, thatit seems like you are scrolling forever. Are you startingh with content at the top section of the page? All these things make for a better user experience.

Conversion.... Layout has everything to do with converting. CRO ( Conversion Rate Optimisation ) is a whole other aspect of study in the realm of websites. How and where you place elements on a page can effect conversions.

Quality is a big factor in seo it is really true, thing is that how it should be considered as quality content, In quality content you can clear about the content what it is about. In article writing maintain quality is very big factor, definitely it should be unique, eye catchy, easy to understand.

Quality content solves reader problems in in-depth, complete fashion. Think more like resource and less like a short article. Layout plays a part in engaging and converting but simply solving a problem is a bigger factor.

I'd add that getting soild links in through valuable, authentic guest posting would certainly be a big factor with SEO too.

What savidge4 said is correct. I tried different things with one of my blog. Here is what I did- first made a WordPress site full fast loading with nothing in sidebar, no author profile in the page, less menu items, no sharing buttons, no clutter what so ever. And then after some days, I made that site with full featured so that visitors can stay on my site. I saw the site in the second case doing better in terms of SEO. It's all about visitor retention, speed and design, which is achieved with only good content on your site.
