Changing to SSL

I'm planning to get an SSL certificate for my website.

I've heard from a number of people that installing one on a site which has many pages can cause ranking drops.

If your changing from HTTP to HTTPS, this will be changing the URLS.

Is it really that simple to just install it and wait for rankings to come back after a couple of weeks?

Thanks

  • If you do it correctly then your rankings may not fall for even a day. Take a look at Moz its used to be Seomoz.

    • Do I need to do anything within Wordpress, any redirects etc?

      Thanks

  • And to answer this, I have done some where there was no ranking change through the whole process. I have done others where we saw a little bit of fluctuation for a few days, but it lasted less than a week. It could last longer, but I have not seen that happen.

    • Thanks for your reply, this is the only part I'm not sure about. Do you know of any good resources that can help?

"You need to make sure your .htaccess file has the proper 301 redirect setup to redirect all non-HTTPS URLs to the corresponding HTTPS URL."
  • In your Google Search Console, you can set up a new property for the https version(s), upload a new sitemap, and then you'll be good to go.

    It's pretty straight forward.
  • I should take that comment back. It depends what kind of server you are on for how you have to do the 301 redirects. There are plenty of guides online.

That is not enough. Doing that does not pass any authority on to the new HTTPS urls. You need to setup the proper redirects.

  • Hello,

If you have a website with no SSL and wanted to activate it now, and have all pages use SSL, then you need to use this plugin, if not you might have many pages not found.

Super easy just click install and watch for message to activate it and should be done, now all pages have SSL.

Here is the name of plugin: Really Simple SSL

    Ok hope this helps

    Thanks Rob.

  • SSL certificate will not cause ranking drops but when you enable SSL certificate at the website, you will have to redirect http urls to https. Because search engine will consider http and https version of the website as different website. So it may happen you will see ranking drop for some days but it will not permanent as https helps to give boost in rankings.
  • Now a days Changing from http too https would rather help you in you rank boosting then drops.
get a help from some developers to get the redirect correctly on your website or use help on web to get it done yourself.
  • Changing to ssl don't create any problem, beside it htpp to https it is good idea and it is more secured. And it ain't causes any ranking problem of a website.
