How To Change URL That Displays In Google's Results?

by David C. 14 replies
Hi guys,

Hope all is well.

I've optimized a page on my site, in order to better rank. One of these things I did was create a better url. I would like this url to display in Google, as well, as I can imagine it could also improve clicks, being that it describes better what's on the page.

However, while the meta title and description have been updated in the SERPS, the old url still shows....

Any way to request an update for this from Google?

Thanks

While you have changed your url so I am guessing that you have properly 301 redirected it to the new one.

Now your title and meta are showing the new one but the url isn't right?

Tell me how much time have passed since you have updated it? Google can take several weeks to update your site's url even if you have 301 redirected it correctly and your rankings are the same.

How goes my friend. I haven't manually done the 301, but the way prestashop is, it automatically forwards it to proper page.

So let's say, I updated the url from mystore.com/simrad to mystore.com/simrad-marine-electronics 6 months ago, with a better meta title and description.

Google is displaying the new meta title and new meta description, so it's definitely been crawled, and if you click on the listing, it leads to the proper page (mystore.com/simrad-marine-electronics), however, the url being displayed is still mystore.com/simrad

Many of these have been fixed a very long time ago... long enough time I'd think for Google to pick it up... gotta be a way?

The "automatically forwards it to proper page" might have been accomplished by a 302 redirect rather than a 301. The difference is that a 302 tells the search engine that this is just a temporary redirect - so they should NOT change their indexing.

Have you thought to ask this question at the Prestashop forums

Wasn't sure of the level of SEO knowledge they'd have over there, compared to here. In past, the experts over there have not helped very much. So perhaps the 301 redirect will take care of it?

By givig proper 302 redirection to the target page you can show your new URL to the search engine.

301 redirection is the best way to improve your URL structure. All pages in a website should have valid and SEO friendly URL.

Old url you can remove by gong to google webmaster tools, after that select "Remove URL" , and past your url there

Did you use a redirection for the old URL? Just wait until Google refreshes its database.

Give some time to index URLs.
Sometime, it will take time to crawl page.

Once you have done the changes in url, I am not talking about meta tags, then the next step should be redirecting those old url's to the new url's which you have changed. Other wise those old url which are already been indexed in google will starts showing 404 errors... so for avoiding that you need to perform 301 redirect. Also regarding old url which you are still able to see, once google will crawl your updated url's it will automatically replace those old links with the new links.

    Morning everyone,

It was in fact a 302 redirect, which I had my developer put a 301 redirect instead.

Still showing the old url structure in the SERPS, but will wait and see now. Thanks everyone.

Now that the 301 redirect is in place, go to Google Webmaster Tools and request that they re-crawl the site so they will see the redirect
