If I decide to randomly target keywords or to build links, I can see some small results, but can't see consistent traffic increases. How to improve all keywords ranking in the search engine?

You will need to target specific keywords.

However if you get backlinks from high authority sites e.g.PR 6 - 10 this would probably give your whole site higher rankings.

Yes, randomly doing things doesn't lead to any sort of positive results. You need to target keyword phrases that you actually have a chance of ranking on page one for.

Then, you need to learn how to properly optimize each page for those phrases.

Finally, you need to get real backlinks to your site (and pages). Real backlinks are not ones that you can place, yourself. You need to get actual people at other websites to decide to link to you.

I agree with them. You need to target your keywords in order to rank on search engines. Randomly targeting keywords won't get you anywhere.

TYPES OF ANCHOR TEXTS TO USE:

    Exact-Match
Anchor text is "exact match" if it includes a keyword that mirrors the page that is being linked to. For example: 'link building' linking to a page about link building.

    Partial-Match
Anchor text that includes a variation of the keyword on the linked-to page. For example: 'link building strategies' linking to a page about link building.

    Generic
A generic word or phrase that is used as the anchor. "Click here" or "Read more" is a common generic anchor.

    Images
Whenever an image is linked, Google will use the text contained in the image's alt attribute as the anchor text.

Here's what worked for me last year:

Updating my blog to a new WordPress template (new one is mobile friendly - this is VERY important). Result: 30% more traffic (!).

Adding more interactive pages to my site. Quizzes, calculators and stuff. This is really easy if you can code a bit of PHP. Just make a new WordPress template, upload to your theme's templates folder, then make a new page using that template. Result: 1 new page made it to the top 10% pages on my site.

Here's what might work for me this year:

Find my blog's 10 most popular pages, then add more content to the pages.

Not sure if this has worked yet, it will take a little while to tell.

BTW if you get traffic from Google then traffic changes due to doing things like these happen EXTREMELY SLOWLY. So only look at your monthly traffic charts.

You need to research keywords. Can't just use any word or phrase that you think will rank. Look at search volume, trends, and intent when picking your keywords to target. Make sure they are relevant to the page that you are optimizing.
