Is a subdomain better for SEO?

So, I have site one: example.com

It's not on a platform that has a good blog platform, so I intend to create a second site on Wordpress to serve as the blog.

Does it matter from an SEO perspective whether I create a subdomain for the Wordpress site or create a new domain with a .blog extension?

In other words:

blog.example.com or example.blog

Does it matter in any significant way?

Thanks

They will both be seen as the same thing - totally separate websites from the main domain.

The best thing from an SEO perspective would be to put it in a subdirectory of the main website (i.e. example.com/blog).

That way, links to the blog help the main domain and links to the main domain help the blog.

Thanks Dave. The main site is on the Teachable platform which doesn't have a particularly good blog function. To get the flexibility (and SEO) I want, I need to use an outside site w/Wordpress.

That's fine. You can install Wordpress in a subdirectory like yourdomain.com/blog and still have the rest of the site running on whatever platform you are using.
