I usually just aim at one keyword per post. I put it in my title, once in my first paragraph, once inside an image alt tag... then I put it in my meta title, and description.

When I look for a long tail keyword, I check for the domain authority of the pages in the 10 first results of Google. If I find 3 pages or more with a PA (page authority) of 30 and more, I will not go for it. Less than that, I will.

You can check that with Mozbar.

I also double check that with Traffic Travis (the free version does it too)( to make sure how easy it will be for me to rank.

Using more keywords its not working for all time, sometimes using more keyword, search engine can take it as a spam, so make sure keyword density is alright. Long tail keyword is good but on these days people are used to use short tail keywords, use both type of keywords would be vice. You can run adword for expand your keyword, though its not free but it works well.

I can advise you to make your article post on social media sites such as facebook, Twitter and Google +

Be mindful of keyword density. Make sure that mentions of your keywords are according to how long your article is, that is, number of words in the article. Overstuffing keywords is a big no-no.

Focus on page and site structure.

Something as simple as bullet points and asking/answering a niche/keyword question can potentially generate a Featured Snippet that outranks the #1 competition. Assuming you're first able to rank anywhere on the 1st page of the SERPs.
