Linking out to authority sites...

Does linking out to a very high authority site do anything for your sites ranking?

I read somewhere that Google expects websites to link out to other sites as you would have other sites backlink to you.

  • I certainly can't do anything harm for your rankings as far as I know. It's although best if the authority site you link to have some relevance to your site.

The search engines will see this as relevance - but how much I don't know.
Link to numerous sites with no relevance is not particularilly good.
Too many links is no good either.
  • I read somewhere a while ago that this worked or at least made some kind of difference somehow / someway. I've never tried it and I'm not sure if I believe it. I've considered it, but to be honest, forget all about it until this post.

I don't imagine it would hurt if you sold sports gear and had a link to ESPN.

  • it would probably help if it is really relevant to the content of your website and much better if your site is also mentioned on that authority site
  • Ya, You are right, Giving a backlink to an authority site (not a link exchange) will help to get more hugs from Google :p
  • interesting, so there does appear to be some weight behind this idea.
  • Actually, Google is known to favor two types of sites: Authority and Hub sites. All we ever hear about is authority sites.

A hub site is one that links to a number of high quality, relevant sites, while also having a lot of incoming links to the site.
