SEO for large ecommerce sites

I've done SEO for smaller, not very complex websites, but now I have a bigger challenge on my hands. I have an ecommerce site with hundreds/thousands of pages and hundreds/thousands of individual products for sale. How do I even approach such a beast? How would my SEO strategy differ from a smaller, simpler site?

    This is my real forte. First of all, does the site have common templates? I generally focus on optimizing the product pages first (they rank easier and lend revenue faster), then category pages, then homepage (for main keywords).

    Link building is about the same. You'll want to have tons of good linkbait, a great marketing message and leverage the current existent channels of communication for link building as well (live chat, emails, order receipts, etc).

    Thanks! It's actually an affiliate site, so I can't really leverage the live chat, receipts etc. I can put a form for a mailing list and links to Twitter etc. and have control over how to set up categories and such, but basically my task is to drive targeted traffic to these pages.
    A lot of them are dynamically generated based on search, i.e. http://www.mydomain.com/searchresult...s=blue+widgets
    so I don't know how that plays into it all.
