Facebook remarketing works similar to Google AdWords remarketing, but rather than showing your ads across websites within the Display Network, your ads are shown on Facebook. Facebook also more commonly refers to remarketing as "Custom Audiences. Here are easy steps to create a Facebook Retargeting Campaign and boost your campaign results

It works generally by placing a tracking pixel on your landing pages (or specifying urls to ad platform). If the user ends up converting or reaching the goal, they are removed from the remarketing list (audience). Personally, I didn't have much success with facebook remarketing for products/services in my verticals. I felt like it limited my exposure compared to my google remarketing campaigns. With google the ads were shown on many more sites vs just on facebook so the cost per impression and click though was much better.

Retargeting and Remarketing are same in advertisement campaign. Both are effective ways to get customers or visitors retained.

The idea is similar to the advert hammering technique we would see in the old days. If you launched a new brand, you would have to keep advertising it on the television till the audiences would remember that brand. However, the trick is to carefully select the market so that you have realistic expectations from the campaigns that you are going to run.

Facebook retargeting (occasionally called remarketing) is a method of advertising to visitors that have come to your target page (sales page?) but have left without converting (buying?).

A "pixel" (code) is placed on your target page that cookies your visitor.
When that visitor then goes to Facebook. Your ad will be displayed.

That way you get multiple opportunities after the original sales page visit to actually sell your product.

A really great guide to what this is and how to do it can be found here
