Well, definitely you would want to jump into news if you have something relevant to it. But here's a tip, you can start by implementing Schema tags onto your website. This will help crawlers understand the type of content your website posts.

If your blog is already indexed in Google, then you don´t need to worry about that. It will be found over time. Just make sure you have made a Google webmaster tools account for your blog. More information here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/

Post around 3-4 articles a day. Also, Install timestamp plugin to add a timestamp to your news article, this helps Google in ranking news section.
