How to get traffic to a food blog?

I co-founded a food blog (foodtippr.com) with my wife, she cooks the food and shoots the videos, and my job is to edit them and manage the website, basically, I am the Tech guy and she is the creative person here.

It has been more than 1 years since we started the blog, we have more than 200 recipes on the blog yet there is hardly any day when we get more than a hundred visitors from the search engine.

In the last 1 year, we grew our Facebook page from zero to 58000 likes, most of it was organic, but Facebook eventually took away our page reach.

I followed exactly what Google wants us publishers to do, which is "create great content, take care of the User experience, and Google will take care of the rest, you don't need to build links to do well in Google search"

We are doing fairly well for a team of 2 as far as the content is concerned.

But now I am thinking I should be building links to the blog maybe that way we start getting some search engine traffic.

If you want any sort of ranking on a Google search, you have to have backlinks.

If you don't mind me asking, does your blog have any sort of twist or niche? I.e., it's specifically Southern USA cooking, Asian, Latin American? Is it foucused on baking, dinners, breakfast meals? Maybe on using a slow cooker, crockpot, freezer meal system, ect?

I ask this because having that kind of focus will make it somewhat easier to rank the site.

Also, have you used any sort of keyword planners to figure out search terms you want to target?

It's much easier to rank a site and get traffic when you have specific keywords you want. Like, you may want to rank for (these are just example keywords that I haven't actually looked into, just for the sake of the example) "easy slow cooker meals" or "30 Minute Baked Salmon with Cheese Sauce", rather than attempting to rank for "food blog" or "recipes".

    Yes,

The focus is on providing easy to learn recipes with overhead short and to the point videos.
    Its mainly Indian food,

I did a bit of research for keywords and we are preparing recipes based on the list.

I'm still not able to figure out why we don't get search traffic. My initial plan was to create these recipe posts, then improve the ones that get search traffic, but when none are showing any positive results, it tough to pick a few to work on, especially when you are working with limited resources.

To rank on Google search results, you will need keywords; words that you hunk people are most likely to search for to find your content. For example, if you want to get a cat and you know nothing about cats, you most probably will be searching for "Things To Know About Cats". The keywords should appear a couple of times in your content. It shouldn't be too much though, else it will be seen as spam.
The second thing I'll be suggesting is backlinking. Without backlink, there won't be a ranking on Google search results. And not just any kind of backlink, but quality ones. It would be superb if they backlinks come from multiple domains.

A good idea would be to put a few of recipes into an Ebook and give it away for free but at the same time direct readers to visit your blog for new recipes. It would also be helpful to start an email list and write a weekly newsletter.

    Hi Asiogroup,

    1. The site is full of spam. If we do a site search in Google on a recipe page (site:foodtippr.com/tava-paneer-frankie/) below the indexed recipe page there are pages created by the images (I think) that link to spam pages for me. A spammy site rarely performs well in Google. I recommend a technical audit be done from a reputable tech SEO (not a surface scraper "audit") to identify and fix these sort of issues.
    2. Any recipe site needs to take advantage of structured data to gain rich snippets in search results (review rating, cook time, calories etc) which studies show may increase organic CTR by 30%. Currently non of your recipes utilize Recipe schema.
    3. Quality, relevant links are a MUST!

    Cheers.

    Hi asiogroup,

Cool; I'm happy you're creating helpful content buddy and also, lesson learned on Facebook. Do most of your creating and connecting on your online real estate.

Google loves folks who create helpful content on their blogs and through a wide range of channels; especially through guest posting.

Build bonds with top food bloggers. Promote them freely. Comment genuinely on their blogs. Guest post invites will flow your way. After guest posting on a handful of top food blogs, you will nab some sweet backlink juice. More than that; the bonds you establish with top bloggers through genuine commenting and by generously promoting them leads to organic traffic through links in, cross-promotion and through other channels.

Quality backlinks are earned, organically, over months and years. Good things take time, and time spent offering generous service will definitely yield sweet things.

The solution for your question is very simple. You shall have to opt for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). You can opt for the following methodologies for the same:
    • Post a pin on Pinterest
    • Create Backlinks
    • Opt for good Keyword Research and Planning
    • On Page keyword listings and optimization

Hope you get the desired traffic by following the above mentioned steps.

Content is the foundation to any good SEO campaign but you still require to promote your website.

Do it ethically with content marketing or press releases. Perhaps in your case, network and partner with other bloggers to guest blog on each other.

Importantly, you must also define your keywords. You can create great content but you ought to know your target audience and what keywords you're hoping to rank for (checking as well whether there are any search traffic for those keywords.) Much like you must know your goals.

    Haha,
Google says you don't need links.

Google also says it's not a monopoly. Funny.

Look, you need backlinks. period. There are huge players in your niche.

There's a lot of ways you can go about this and there are some pretty advanced strategies.

I suggest you just build relationships and joint partnerships.

Your wife makes recipe videos right? Are they health-oriented?

Fitness bloggers would love for her to make content specifically for their audience. PRobably a quick snack that's high in protein or something like that.

You can literally sit down for a full day of making different snacks, edit the videos into short time-lapse blurbs. When you secure the gest post opportunity, just edit in a custom intro for their website and audience.

First you need to decide what way you want to go with your business depending on your budget, profit goal and time-frame..

You can go up in rankings with some SEO on-site and off-site white-hat of course (guest-posting, pinterest, social media, etc) or you can go the other route building a list of potential customers in case you want to make your own product or promote other people's products. You can do both but it will take more time and bigger budget (first u put your site at the top in Google and then capture and monetize the traffic..

Try to target the audience who are searching your recipes. And for making the best-targeted blog you have to some sort of research in your category. Follow the blogs who are getting the rank in your category.

Explain the recipes in the easier way and make quality backlinks for your blog.

For social media use the hashtag for the targeted audience.

As someone has already said, you need a good backlicking strategy. Also, what is your presence on YouTube - do you have a presecene on the site with subscribers? Sorry if this has already been answered but it is sometimes much easier to rank for videos, especially Google-owned YouTube videos than websites.

Use the videos you record and cut to drive traffic to your site - post a link to your site in the description of every video and utilise content marketing that way.

Yes, you definitely need to be building links to the blog in order to improve your keywords' rankings in the Google. Great content is not enough. You need to have good on page optimization (content that is optimized for yoiur targeted keywords) And quality backlinks pointing back to your site.

I'd say instead of focusing on Organic traffic as of now, concentrate on referral traffic. Find food communities where you can share your videos/blog links etc. Reddit is one such platform. It has many food/recipe related sub-reddits which can generate a great stream of traffic is used properly.

Also, commenting on food blogs can also prove good. Social media can again be a great tool for increasing visits to a food blog.

Other than keywords research and onpage optimization, you can follow some techniques that most SEO Agencies use to rank food and recipes websites -
Guest Posting - Approach fellow bloggers in your niche and offer them a guest post. Ask them to provide a backlink to your blog in content or in Author bio.
Blog commenting - Visit fellow bloggers' websites and leave useful comments. It will create engagement with fellow bloggers and generate traffic with people who click your blog link.
Join recipe blog networks - Make sure to join food blog networks such as Yummly, Foodista.com, Nibbledish, FoodBloggers.net.
Forum Participation - Join forums for food blogs, recipes and food. Be active with helpful contributions and participate in the discussions on these forums. Add website link in your signature.
Create Content in other formats too - Create PPT, PDF, Images, Infographics and share them on document sharing sites such as SlideShare, Pinterest etc.
Social Signals - Generate social signals by sharing your content on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Google Plus.
Internal linking - Link other blog posts on your own site when creating new content. This will improve your SEO.

Go social and don't just rely on the blog.

Post your videos to Youtube, create an Instagram, use Pinterest. All good for food related content. Start growing audiences for free and direct them back to your blog to capture their details. Once you have details, you can email them and get them back to your site whenever you want to.

But I'd certainly focus on one social site, grow it, then move onto another.

But now I am thinking I should be building links to the blog maybe that way we start getting some search engine traffic.

There are many ways to increase traffic of your blog or website but there is one most usable method which is submitting a guest post.

find a high authority food blogs and ask them to write a guest post for their blog post with High Quality Content. Content is King.

You can drive useful traffic to your blog by participating as a author to another blog.

Find a professional who will do the on-page and off-page SEO for you (the latter involves link building on other relevant places that lead to your site. Because the blog is about food, Instagram can also be very powerful. Build your IG and put links to your blog in images you post.

You don't make 100 visits per day that is a big problem for 50,000 likes Facebook.

I have a solution if you want.

You have to optimize keywords and optimize content and backlinks

Of course, paid traffic and SEO are the best tools. But they are very expensive now.

I use the alternative company Google or Bing ads etc. - Qualibid. They have a checker for the cost of keywords. The traffic is much less but it costs a penny and this is the real people who are interested in certain information! You can register and try to check your keywords on the bid checker....

Just visited your blog, and I found some photo links are broken.
There're some ads going on in your blog too.
Beside that, your website content looks really nice.
As everyone mentioned, you need backlinks, you can try that.

For getting traffic first you'll be needing to rank good for that keyword. And to rank for that keyword you'll be needing to do Keyword research for the niche you're trying to rank on. Search for the queries that people are commonly using and are most likely to use. After that you need to do a use these keywords to create content on your website. Good, informative and fresh content pieces that people would love to read. These content pieces should answer user queries.
Then you'll be needing some good backlinks from good authority sites in your niche. It's important because without backlinks it'll be very very difficult to get rankings in google.
    Hope it helps!

Are you using Youtube in your strategy? These days vlogs are much popular than blogs. If you are doing it already you need to start it now. Make a youtube channel and upload your videos on that. It will give you visits, money, branding and everything which a blog seldom gives.

if you want traffic on your blog so you should focus on keywords. yeah, you must find keywords basis on food and food recipes,

The answer is interactive content marketing. The thought is to make content that simply is something beyond text and images. Interactive content is an experience. Visitors can engage with this content structure better. It gives them instant gratification without them submitting at any level. An ideal case of interactive content will be calculators and quizzes. They give customized results to the clients and thus their chances of being shared are higher.

Create an Instagram page. Everything else follows from there, but as a start you can post to Instagram whatever food you want. You might also want to create Instagram stories and have them sponsored.
