2.8.4 Wordpress google indexing heads-up

Hi all,

Just a quick heads up as this Wordpress indexing issue has come up in a couple threads and seems to merit its own front page mention: some new installs of Wordpress 2.8.4 are set as no-follow/no-index by default. If you don't know this, you will wait and wait for your site to get indexed. And it never will, no matter how tantalizing your seo efforts are. To fix this you must go to your privacy settings and toggle on the "I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Sphere, Technorati) and archivers" option and save.

This issue has been brought up in the Wordpress.org forum -- there is some thought there that it happens with new 2.8.4 Fantastico installs from the cpanel, which would fit my case, but it may happen from manual installs too. It's worth checking if you've been pulling your hair out over not getting indexed.

It doesn't happen with manual installs. I've installed both ways and only with Fantastico did it to default to this wretched setting . Probably more a Fantastico problem than a WP problem, it would be suicidal for them to set the privacy option on by default and not let users know. Good lookin out though.

  • I don't use Fantastico and I have not seen this behavior on any manual installs.

  • This is the "Blog Visibility" feature of Wordpress.

As Kingside mentioned, whether you get an install that defaults to "Private" will depend on the Fantastico script version and setup from your ISP.

Once you've installed Wordpress, simply log into your admin dashboard, go to Settings / Privacy and you can toggle it on or off.

It's a good idea when creating a WP blog, whether manual (my preferred method) or fantastico, to keep your blog from being indexed until you have solid content. If you're tweaking the theme to your liking (like I usually do) and don't have content then there's not reason to have G or any other SE index your site....yet.

Get the content, make your tweaks, then set your blog live in the Settings >> Privacy. This should be something you do with every blog you setup (imo) otherwise Google will index a haphazard blog "under construction" if you know what I mean.

So, on that note, get used to the Privacy settings and use it to your advantage!

I'm not sure how to take this post.

If it's sarcasm, then LOL, good one.

If it's serious, then ....

        I'm hoping it was sarcasm.

What I find is that if you try too hard, ie build a site then immediately get bookmarks and other backlinks it could take your site from days to weeks to index.

Take it easy, add your site to G, Y, MSN (Bing) then move on to other sites and come back after a couple days or more.

Thanks for that Alan. I first noticed it a few weeks back, and that at first I though I'd done something wrong. Then I thought it was a server issue, but it seems it's a universal thing.

As a lot of others have pointed out though, WTF would they do that for? Bizarre.

    All the best.
