Is blog commenting still relevant?

I've been studying and practicing link building for just 2 months now.

Now I know what you think; link builders have some pretty bad reputation around the web. But I do white hat SEO like blog commenting and guest postings.

It just interests me how easy it is to do blog commenting to blogs (I really read them though) and you can get so many nofollow links.

I know that the diversity in your link profile between nofollow and dofollow links is good. But I just need to ask the experts:

How much weight do nofollow links from blog commenting have?

I have read a lot of articles about this. Either its nofollow links are irrelevant or blog commenting is dead.

What are your thoughts on this?

  • No-follow links doesn't help you to get ranked so if you are trying build links then blog commenting is a NO. And you don't need to diversify your link profile either.

    • What other link building techniques would you recommend other than blog commenting and guest posting?

  • You won't get any SEO love from your links but you may score some direct traffic.
  • In terms of SEO, blog commenting has no value. But in terms of marketing and brand building, that's good. That's a good way to help you to get more people know about you, people can know you are working in that niche, you look like an expert.

  • Blog commenting sites are hotspots for link builders and spammers for that Google already knew this kind of strategy so it will not work, since then.
  • Blog commenting works for your business for branding. And for business branding is must, so for full-fill brading purpose you have to use blog commenting.
  • Hey Jamie,

Directing traffic to your site is a huge part of SEO. Even though a lot of people would say blog commenting does not get you any significant SEO benefits, it does create brand awareness. Sharing your knowledge on relevant sites will definitely attract people back to your online property. The more popular and engaging your website is, the better your rankings are.

    I hope this helps. Cheers

  • Blog comments and forum posting are pretty divisive practices. They can make you look like a spammer if you overdo your self-promoting.

I'm no expert on this subject, but for marketing and branding, blog commenting is okay. SEO-wise, I personally wouldn't put much stock into it, although there are a lot of folks out there who'd outsource this type of work. It can help bring traffic to your site though.

  • Blog commenting used to have a certain weight in the SEO strategy..but nowadays Google is much smarter and realized that the website owners manipulate the rankings by doing that..

However you can get some traffic, some exposure if you comment on some popular sites..but the main thing is to provide value, to help people when commenting..
  • I think blog commenting is a great tool of SEO activity for website promotion. It's a really good source of diverse links back to your domain. Its main goal is to drive traffic to your website and its beneficial if your comments is approved .
  • I think that blog commenting is the best way to get top rankings in google search engine. Effective blog commenting plays an important role to attract traffic on to the blog or website. It is a great way to exchange ideas, thoughts or opinions about what people feel about a particular topic. Main advantages of blog commenting are following:

    1) Helps to attract more traffic and visitors to your website.

    2) Helps to build the strong relationship with the bloggers or site administrators etc.
  • I love the interaction between people. Divided opinions. Thanks for the inputs. Would love to see more detailed inputs. Thanks!

  • Blog commenting is relevant to a point but you have to write unique comments and it should be related to the topic, that way, you will get approved and Google will also index it giving you some boost.
  • Yes, blog commenting is still a relevant technique to improve business brand visibility. Dont directly comment, better to take participate in the conversation there, don't put links in the comment box, better to create link in the name box with user names specially. make unique informative comment, don't copy and paste content from other websites.
  • Personal opinion, blog commenting focuses on adding value than the SEO aspects. Your comment stays there as long as the blog is around and that might translate to passive traffic to you in the long run.

  • I've seen a recommendation by a blogger that when commenting you should put your URL next to your name, e.g. John | johnsblog.com (no that's not my blog)

According to the blogger it greatly increased traffic from her comments. Does that seem like a reasonable thing to do or does it seem too spammy?
  • Blog commenting is relevant if you are contributing something valuable with your comment and engaging blogger in a conversation. After building a relationship with the blogger, you may ask him to mention your article link in his blog posts as reference if its relevant.
  • I know that some people say you don't need to diversify your backlink profile but personally I prefer to play it safe and have a nice ratio of nofollow to do follow. I can't see how having these nofollow links would hurt but not having them I think might hurt my ranking.
  • If you have 100% do follow link on your website, google treat is as over optimized and have a possibility to get a penalty. But, if you maintain a good dofollow : nofollow ratio, I think it will better for you. Considering this fact blog commenting have two-fold importance. 1. Create no-follow link, 2. Drive quality traffic.
  • Blog commentinghh is practically irrelevant in this day and age.
  • I think Blog Commenting is still relevant because it is link building technique which is used to create links from blogs sources but most of Blog gives us no follow links so you should aware which is nofollow and which is dofollow even no follow links give traffic. So I think Blog commenting is useful.
  • Now its irrelevant, instead of blog commenting use forum posting and guest posting.
  • Blog commenting helps a great deal in directing site traffic!
  • I totally agree with tomopalinski, although blog commenting do not give you SEO benefits it creates brand awareness if comment live on a relevant website.
  • Personally, I prefer to play it safe and have a nice ratio of nofollow to do follow. I can't see how having these nofollow links would hurt but not having them I think might hurt my ranking. Blog commenting helps to rank as well.
  • In Seo every activity plays an important role its all depends how you use it. Blog commenting is still in action and have its own role in SEO
  • Direct traffic on website help in seo? do any one have idea
  • I still see people ranking with blog comments, but I don't believe spamming comments will bring much value.
  • No blog commenting is one of the worst ways to bulid links these days.
  • Definitely, but focus on building friendships generously and patiently over months versus trying to build links.

Blog commenting - the right way, being generous and personalizing comments - is hands down the easiest way to bond with top bloggers if you stick to it patiently. I inspired a NY Times Best Selling Author to tweet endorse 2 of my eBooks without asking him to do so via blog commenting. Effective, genuine blog commenting.
