Tips on moving to a subdomain

Due to hosting issues, we will be forced to move our discussion forum to a subdomain (vs. subdirectory).

It generates a huge amount of traffic and I'm worried about the effect this will have on my overall SEO. Can anyone offer some tips to minimize the negative effect?

I know there is a lot of debate on the overall effect of subdomains vs subdirectories, but I'd like to minimize any potential impact in case this causes a lot of issues.

  • Get a new host. Keep it in the directory. Problem solved.

  • If you move it to a sub-domain then you will have to do SEO all over again for it. As, search engines considers sub-domains as separate domains. So, just like Mike said earlier move your site to a new hosting company.

  • Mike is right. Get a new host. Sure, you can try interlinking pages between the two to mitigate things but it will never be the same as when it is all on the same domain.
  • I imagine it's a tad more complex than that.

I imagine the OP was using the subdirectory for the domain, other domain, or other such rot.

Perhaps the hosting will not allow a domain to go to a subdirectory.

Perhaps OP has 2 domains, or more, one server.

If the main domain on the root/public directory aint makin' squat, cancel that, switch the forum to root/public.

Even that move might not be perfect....

No way would I ever mess with subdirectories in the first place.

If domains are not the issue, then you have real problems.

Webhosts sell the ideas of multiple domain names on the same account.

Really a bad idea. But it sure sells, I suppose.

It sounds good in theory....and when selling hosting.

I chuckle as I just thought that something simple as deleting the root, then renaming the subfolder public_html might work....or blow up.
