Better one site for all content or four separate sites?

Hi,
I am the owner of four websites in Japanese formy company.
Oneof the sites is for the company itself and each one of the other three is for each family of products.
I thought this would be the best wasy way to approach the market as then each customer could go directly to each site and check
Moreover, I thought this would be the best from a SEO point of view as then I would be able to target keywords and seo structure for each family of products independently
However, now problems are arising:
1) it is moreexpensive to maintain four different sites than one single one
2) I am not sure the overal ranking is better as having about 1/4 of the backlinks for each site does not improve each site position much,while it would be maybe better to have one single site with way more content and 4x times or 3x times the backlinks
I have initially thought that creating 4 sites would also help with having cross backlinks from one site to the other that would help gaining backlinks this way , but I am not sure it works/it is worth the effort.
On the other hand, having a solid website with lots of content in it for all the four families or products may indeed prove the best as you would reach a better placement with one single site than with each of the four sites independently
