Question for SEO Experts: Is It O.K. to Have a # Sign in URL?

I bought the Side Wiki WSO blocker and while this thing seems to work perfectly, it puts a random string at the end of every url - including your home page so the url looks like this:

http://mydomain.com/keyword_phrase/#0985lkjsj48

or

http://mydomain.com/#09850ljlkjljse

I asked the author of this script if this string will affect my SEO efforts in anyway. He says the search engines ignore everything after the # sign.

I need some confirmation from other SEO people that this is indeed the case and that this script is "safe" to use for SEO purposes.

Travis

P.S. The author of the script does concede that when someone social bookmarks the url, they will bookmark the url with the random string. The user will still get to the url but in terms of getting backlinks, doesn't that screw things up since the random string will always be different (hence I'll have multiple versions of the url out there)?
