Did you know that 93% of all online experiences begin with a search engine? Nearly 3 out of 5 times it's still Google we're all using, and almost 70% of the time we don't look any further than the first 5 results. This shows you just how vital getting into those top results with effective search engine optimisation (SEO) is to the success of your site.

There are many facets to achieving successful SEO, for this mini guide we're focusing on what's called 'onsite SEO'. In brief, onsite SEO involves ensuring the pages, titles, tags, content and overall structure of your website is optimised using target keywords relevant to your business or industry.

In other words, it's all about getting Google to notice you.

I'm going to break the onsite SEO process down for you into easy to understand stages to help you achieve higher rankings and increase traffic to your website. I'm here to help you get noticed!

N.B. This guide is strictly designed for beginners, so if you're a bit of an SEO ninja I probably won't be telling you anything you don't already know here!

  • Hi Gabriel,

Content really is it. King and Queen. I think cross-promoting and getting SEO juice too is easier through guest posting versus marketing content to death. Offer value always - of course - but simple guest posting drove some sweet search traffic to my blog. After 2000 guest posts Actually after a handful but publishing quality guesties daily and posts to BFP helped me drive steady search traffic.

    Fab post dude.

    • Page authority is based on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [DELETED]
    • Page Authority (PA) is a score developed by Moz that predicts how well a specific page will rank on search engine result pages (SERP). Page Authority scores range from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank.

  • Great Post. I would like to add something to the duplicate content. The rules are actually slightly different for duplicate content when you compare general SEO to Local SEO (ranking only in particular location as oppose of nationally).

With local SEO, Google Algorithm is much more lenient towards duplicate content as long as it is only appearing on your domain, that is. I believe that Google Rankbrain knows that some businesses may have designated inner pages, each focusing on different locations, such as New York and New Jersey. Because of it, if those inner pages share identical top part of the site, Google will not think anything of it.

I would not copy and paste everything from one site to the next, but keeping the layout and main ideas similar between those inner pages is perfectly fine.

    What do you guys think?

  • Gabriel great stuff
two things that are missing are

    clicks on site
since the browser chrome is used approx by 70% of the population
it gives Google a clear heat map of user interactions on site
so if a visitor clicked immediately it would have a low dwell time but instead of gotten a signal for relevancy by the click
I'm working with clients in the real estate industry and the top page one listings have items to get a visitor to immediately click something
I have no proof this action is getting them ranked on page one but it definitely has a correlation of positive actions taken for relevancy

and second Google does see images
alt tags original intention was for blind people
now Google has an image search engine which uses facial recognition technology
if you want to see if your image is unique enter it into the image search engine and most times Google will show how many times that image shows up

overall great start thanks for sharing
    Ed

  • You've likely heard of SEO, and if you haven't already, you could obtain a quick Wikipedia definition of the term, but understanding that SEO is "the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's unpaid results" doesn't really help you answer important questions for your business and your website.
