Hi Experts,

What will be the consequences if SSL does not get installed on a website? Will this also impact the SEO?

Please reply.

  • SSL doesn't really have an impact on rankings. However, starting in July, any webpage not using it will be reported as "not secure" in Google Chrome. That could hurt traffic and conversions.

  • I know that Google is pushing this issue. But it doesn't really matters in the SERP's.

  • Your SSL certificate does have an impact on rankings, but what's more important is your site speed and load times. Make sure that is up to scratch.

  • But what if a website is perfectly optimized but doesn't have an SSL?
  • Hello,

If you have informative website then you don't require SSL and if your website is related to ecommerce then it should be your first priority to buy SSL for your website security.

    Hope this will help you!
  • It doesn't effect on rankings as much, but question is if you really need SSL. It also slow down your website, which is really bad for SEO

    • Ignore this. It's not true at all.

  • I don't know why this keeps coming up. Just do it.

You can get it free with LetsEncrypt. It takes 10 minutes. Maybe an hour if you have never done it before. Find a tutorial on installing it and creating your 301 redirects in htaccess, etc. Easy peazy!

Who cares if it greatly enhances your SEO or not. You know it will certainly not hurt it. Anyone trying to make money online no matter what type of website they have, should want to have an up-to-date, secure, efficient and speedy website. Do you really want the first impression of your visitors to be that you are still in the dark ages of the Internet? The sooner someone updates a website the sooner they start getting backlinks to the https that don't have to be redirected. That might seem like a little thing but it is one more way to create/maintain an efficient website.

I believe that anything you can do to build a better website will indirectly help your SEO. It might be very indirect and it might only be a tiny, tiny help. Those tiny things add up and can only help.

Fine, but OP is clearly freaking out and paranoid that Google will bury them in the SERPs If they don't bow down to their SSL sideshow.

Right now, today, SSL is nothing for SEO.
  • Great advice is always valuable. Thanks for helping me in this context.
  • Definitely get it if you're taking payments on your site. But its not easy, especially if you have a large e-commerce site. If you mess up the redirects and canonicals, your rankings will tank.

Here's a comprehensive guide to switching to HTTPS, from an ex Google engineer:

  • Think long term. SSLs are cheap. You dont need to spend a lot of money initially. It doesnt have any impact on SEO right now but if you look at some of the recent Google updates, it is obvious that it will be important in the future.
  • Go with a host who offers free SSL through cPanel. AutoSSL is much easier than other means to install and maintain through cPanel. It just take a few clicks and that will fix your security and SEO.

  • By enabling SSL into your website you will get better ranking in search engine. HTTPS in url will help you stay in good grace with Google. Security for your website and for your user is the most important aspect of making the switch from HTTP to HTTPS. HTTPS is not only good for security but also for refferal data and other SEO strategies.
  • In today's scnerio, It will affect the SEO ranking because google considers it as a ranking factor..In e-commerce industry or something like that SSL should be installed on a website...
