I have a client that is the USA division of an international company. The USA website has always been a separate domain from the international site, but now the international headquarters wants to shut down the US site and move all of the content into the international site. The problem is that we've successfully managed to get good rankings for a number of keywords on the US site, and are concerned that the move will hurt the US division with searchers in the USA. If we create new, optimized pages on the international site (based and hosted in Germany) and use 301 redirects to point all of the US site content to the new domain, can we expect the rankings to be hurt? We want to make sure that someone physically located in Montana, for example, still sees our optimized pages in their search results, even though the optimized pages are now part of the international site.
