Hey everyone,

So I was doing some research about a particular niche in a small town to se how easy it is to rank there.

I was surprised to find a website with just 1 backlink, yes just 1 backlink ranking on the first page position number 3!

This website has:
1 The full number: 1 External backlinks Pointing to: domain
100% Follow links (Percentage)
1 Referring Domains Pointing to: domain
1 Referring IP's Pointing to: domain

The # 4 postion is:
1.48K External backlinks Pointing to: domain
70% Follow links (Percentage)
128 Referring Domains Pointing to: domain
115 Referring IP's Pointing to: domain

#2 has:
2.95K The full number: 2952 External backlinks Pointing to: domain
60% Follow links (Percentage)
225 Referring Domains Pointing to: domain
246 Referring IP's Pointing to: domain

#5 has:
40.53K The full number: 40526 External backlinks Pointing to: domain
74% Follow links (Percentage)
47 Referring Domains Pointing to: domain
56 Referring IP's Pointing to: domain

So my question is how can a website with just 1 backlink with a DA of 56 be ranking on the first page and ranking even higher than some websites with thousands of backlinks? How did it end up on the first page?

Thanks in advance,
Etuo

Contrary to popular opinion, the number of backlinks is not the only thing that gets a page raked - especially when you are talking about locality-based SEO. There are nearly 200 factors that go into Google's ranking algorithm. They've probably done plenty of other good things that got them to where they are. And, of course, the number of links is pretty meaningless when they are crappy links.

I couldn't agree more! I bet the website has a pretty good on page in it. Or perhaps the backlink checker you have isn't giving you all the links. Just a thought.

Dave said it; hundreds of factors here at play. I pay little attention to SEO but a while back reached page 1 for "how to submit a guest post" and "how to rank on page 1 of google" and honest I did like 2 out of those 200 things. But I wrote a helpful, thorough article. You do that and you will be good to go. No worries when you publish insightful content.

If a website is just starting out and doesn't have any traffic how would great content help if nobody knows about it, no traffic, and no shares? Otherwise I agree with you.

      What do you recommend?
      Thanks,

The best advice would be to ignore that crap suggested.

If you are trying to rank in a local market, you need a Google My Business page and you need to get citations.

Both those keywords get searched about 20 times per month. They are completely non-competitive, useless keywords. And for the second one, which is definitely the more competitive of the two, you are nowhere in the top 100.

Three of the sites ranking ahead of you for "how to submit a guest post" are not even targeting the phrase at all.

Backlinks is not only main factor for getting rank on the search engine, we can get rank through the On-Page Also. So it does not matter website has only one backlinks and it can be backlinks not crawled by Google.

Look at those competitors. Thousands of links but 25-40% of those links are nofollow. That is a sure sign of spammy, low-quality link building. They are likely doing a lot of things like automated blog commenting. That's about the only way you will see a site with that high of a percentage of nofollow links.

So even the links that are not nofollow are likely trash.

Also, for local rankings, citations play a huge role in rankings.

be aware that at least as of two weeks ago Moz had two link explorers and the free one wasn't being updated efficiently. Moz maybe horrible but it usually takes more than one link to show a DA 56. Plus make sure you are not making a rookie mistake. The url including the WWW can make a huge difference.

I think you might be looking at old data that has not been updated or just partially updated. its hit or miss based on the domains you are looking at.
