I have an old Wordpress website and I noticed that on my general settings I have the following:

WordPress Address (URL): http://mysite.com
Site Address (URL): http://mysite.com

So what I do form the very start is that I usually ad "www" to the URL. For some reason I haven't done so for this site. So what happens to my ranking if I do it now?

I found this information:

"In short: there is no SEO benefit to choosing one over the other.

However, it's important that you stay consistent. If you commit to using www, you are committing to using it for the duration of your website's lifespan.

This is because Google will index your website based on this initial choice. Going forward, Google will crawl your website based on your www/non-www preference, and will also display your website based on this preference in the SERPs."

So does that mean that I mess up my ranking if I add "www" to my URL at this point?

1st, add the Google webmaster tools site/code verification snippet to the <head> of your Home page.

2nd, there's a setting in webmaster tools that ask you which one you prefer www vs non-www and has some information about each one, go there, read the info and pick whichever one makes sense for you.

3rd, Fetch the Home page inside webmaster tools so you know Google has a fresh re-index of the page.

    Done.

Nope, I would suggest you, add all the 4 version of your site in GSC

    www | non-www | http | https

group em into one and define your preferred version of url in GSC

and add sitemap etc into your preferred version

additionally, you can simply add a 301 redirect code to your .htaccess
so no matter what mean anyone visits your site. He/she will be redirected to preferred version. Google will honor this and make all your indexed URLs to your chosen protocol.
