Hi, if you've just one hour to burn, which of the following is the best way to build backlinks to a new niche site and why?:
  1. Commenting on blogs
  2. Building a Hubpage or Squidoo lens
  3. Submitting an article to 20 top article directories
  4. Writing posts in forums related to the niche
  5. Submitting URL to free website directories
  6. Social bookmarking website pages
  7. Something else
Thanks!

If you have the time and the capacity to write 20 good articles, well optimized around specifics keys words and submit them to them to the top directories will the the first one.

I will start with this, then create a linkwheel with them around a well optimized hub page or my wordpress blog!

      Hello opportunities,

Please can you tell me how the linkwheel would work?

        Hi Pufferf1sh,

A linkwheel is an effective way to build backlink. It sems that google do not value link echange betwen two sites as we used to do it before (Site A link to Site B and vice versa)

With a link linkwheel you can have great success, here is the process:
first you create a blog (well optimized around your targetted keywords) (main site) Then you build 6 or then other blogs (that can be hup pages, squidoo, articles)

Each one will have a link directed to your main blog and
site A links to site B
Site B links to site C
Site C links to site D
site D link to site E
.... And the last one link to the firt one.

That create a link around your man site, your blog.
That works very good... and you will see your blog starting to rank high with good traffic from google and others search engines!

I'm a fan of article marketing too. All the other stuff improves your ranking over time. But article drive traffic. And traffic is the best rank booster.

I've had good results with social bookmarking, fast results and for the most part long lasting

I have a review product that I did like a year or 2 ago, that is still ranked #6 in Google

I was testing a method I got from Howie Schwartz

Created a lens, and bookmarked it in a few places and then submitted the RSS feeds

    I'm pretty sure that's all I did

      Hi Scottie,

Was there much competition for the keyword you were targeting? Social bookmarking seems great for getting indexed, but when I take a look at others' sites to see where they got their links from, I only ever seem to see one or two backlinks from bookmarks...

        I sent you a PM

Blog and forum comments can be seen as spam and deleted...and I personally think that social bookmarking is overhyped a little bit.
Thanks for playing along Matt! Article marketing does seem to have its values especially as the links are likely to stick around for a long time, plus (as Debbie says) there is the added benefit of some potential organic traffic thrown in as well. I submit an article to about 50 directories, but only tend to see about 10 backlinks or so for each one... is that normal?

Thanks Scot and good to see social bookmarking worked for you.

With a link linkwheel you can have great success, here is the process:

Site B links to site C
Site C links to site D
site D link to site E
Thanks opportunities for this. I think I have the 'spokes' of this wheel in place but have not linked the secondary sites in a circle. Would it be beneficial to link all the sites in the 'rim' as many times as possible as long as they were only one-way links?

Also I was wondering how many links people seem to get from each article they post to a set of directories? I only seem to get a bout ten links from 50 directories, which means that for a site needing 500 odd links to rank favourably, around 50 articles might be needed? Pretty hard going!

Cheers for that. Lots of people seem to recommend article submitting first, but like I mentioned above; most of the sites I look into seem to linked mostly from blog comments... Is that just incidental or what most people do?
