Does mobile redirect effect SEO

Hi,
We have 2 sites one that has a mobile version and one that does not.
If we redirect the one that does not have a mobile version to the other only for mobile users, can it have a negative effect of the SEO of the desktop site (for the site that does not have a mobile version)?
Someone mentioned that since we are redirecting, google will start deindexing our urls and we will drop in SEO - however, I don't understand why this would be the case since for non-mobile users we are not redirecting anything.
