Traffic Sources (Quora specific) + Keyword research

Hi Guys,
I have seen a lot mentioned about using Quora to boost traffic by answering questions with thorough answers. I was wondering how you get the people to your site though. Is it from people clicking on your name and seeing you are from website xyz.c0m and then going there OR do you actually post the link to your site in the answer (this would seem a bit spammy)?
Also I was wondering if there are any other sites out there which can give alternative ideas for keywords when doing research, I never realised Ahrefs and SEMrush were sooooooo expensive.
