Hey Guys,

Was wondering if there were any expert warriors here who knew if there was a way to track exactly where you were getting clicks from (for CPA).

For example, If i was advertising on microsoft, google, and yahoo and they brought visitors to my page, is there a way for me to see exactly which user it was that converted?

On a lower level, is there a way for me to see exactly which keyword from google that actually got the user to click on the cpa link?

Thanks for all the help in advance.

    Hey Darwin,

The best way I found to track CPA type affiliate programs is a cool FREE software called Prosper202. It's a script that you can install on your server. If you don't have a server you can sign up for FREE and get Tracking202 which is the exact same script only hosted for you.

There are other products you can purchase, but Prosper202 was designed from the ground up for PPC to CPA so it really fits well with that model.

It has a bunch of really cool features that are extremely helpful. For instance you can cloak all your data. That's important to keep affiliate managers from providing your data to other affiliates or publishers from stealing your campaigns.

If you have any questions on tracking, I'd be happy to answer them.

    Hope that helps out...

    Thanks,

    Derek

    Derek,
Lot of people recommend google conversion tracking.
Then why use prosper202? what are the benefits compared to Google conversion tracking?

    Thanks.

      Hey Angel Man,

Google Conversion Tracking is ok... It's not as accurate as I would like it to be, but it works decent. It's great if you're a product owner.

Here's the downside, you have to place some code on the thank you page of the offer. Easy enough if you you're the product owner. But as an affiliate it's more difficult to get that done.

So Prosper202 uses the sub Id mechanism built into most affiliate programs so you don't need to place any code on the thank you page, of course you still have that option if you want to automate your tracking or if you're a product owner.

For affiliates Prosper202 also cloaks your data so that affiliate managers and publishers can't share your hard earned campaign data or steal it outright from you.

There are some other advantages too like you can use Prosper202 for more than just Google and PPC in general.

You can track most any marketing link you put out there...

There are several tracking options available... It really depends on whether your a product owner or an affiliate or both and what your needs are. It's going to vary a little for most every campaign.

      Hope that helps out...

      Thanks,

    Derek,
    Thanks for the reply.
This is what Amit Mehta, PPC classroom 2.0 now 3.0 fame, says about Google conversion tracking.
    1. if we want to do Google content network then placement targeting: GCT is a must
    2. it works seemlessly with Adwords editor.
    3. nowadays almost all cpa guys place the pixel. OR they allow subID system, so we can just put the Google tracking code there.

I heard CJ merchants give problems though and here Prosper202 might help.

I realize for yahoo and msn: have their own tracking system.

My question: Can we cloak links using google conversion tracking? or not?
How about combining both Google conversion tracking and Prosper202, if GCT doesn't cloak and we use prosper202 to cloak.

    What do you suggest?

    Thanks.

PS: I read that you are going to update the videos for prosper202, did you update? If yes, how to get them. I got your prosper202 videos recently.

      Hey Angel Man,

      You're welcome...

Well, there is a reason why he uses GCT code for content network tracking.

Basically you need to know which website (domain) and actual web page(s) are converting. You also need to know which ads are converting for you if you're split testing. As well as which Ad Group the ads came from.

So using GCT is a good way to do that, but not the only way. Also when you use GCT you don't get real-time stats, it takes 48 hours or so before you can pull the reports.

You can use Prosper202 / Tracking202 to get that same information.

You can also use other tracking software like Affiliate Prophet to get that information too and if you doing CPA offers you can combine both Prosper202 / Tracking202 and Affiliate Prophet to gather a wealth of information on your campaigns.

What's important is that you get the proper information so you can use it to build out your Placement campaign.

Now that is a great benefit of GCT... It does work seamlessly with Adwords Editor. Most of your other tracking system will require links for the tracking so a little extra work is needed.

The good news is the extra work pays some dividends like real-time tracking information, cloaking your links in the case of Prosper202 / Tracking202, and some other cool stuff.

Well, I wouldn't say most CPA networks allow for adding a tracking pixel, but many do. Most of the time you're dependent on your Affiliate Manager to make sure it gets done for you. There are some exceptions where you can add your tracking pixel or postback URL right in the you affiliate network system.

As far as adding the GCT to the Sub Id system, I would sure like to know how that works. The Sub Id system is quite a bit different then the GCT and uses a unique identifier added to you affiliate link to give you a clue where your conversions are coming from.

The GCT is an image pixel that fires from the thank you page when you make a conversion. How would that fire as a Sub Id?

The Sub Id system is how Propser202 and Tracking202 work. They add a unique Id to your affiliate links. You can then pull a report from your affiliate network and update your Sub Id's in P202 or T202 and you know where your conversion are coming from.

I honestly don't think adding your GCT code as a Sub Id will work with the affiliate networks Sub Id system. I could be wrong...

Prosper202 and Tracking202 will help with any affiliate network that uses a Sub Id system or allows for a tracking pixel or postback URL.

Even better your P202 / T202 tracking pixel or postback URL are universal so you can place that same pixel on any offer page and still get your stats. And it works for all your different search engine traffic including Google, Yahoo, and MSN among other traffic sources.

No need to have your Affiliate Manager placing a million different tracking pixel's on all the different offers you're promoting.

So you can't cloak links using the GCT code... It's just an image pixel, that's it. Nothing fancy there.

Sure you can combine multiple tracking systems at the same time... It's actually pretty cool to do that.

It's hard to make a suggestion when I don't know what you're trying to accomplish... Depending on what you're doing will depend on a good route to take for your tracking.

If you want to provide some details I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

I'm actually in the process of updating the videos currently as I have received a ton of feedback so far which is really helping me make them much better. I have a lot of videos to do and am going way more in depth then before and step-by-step, if all goes well, I won't miss any dots this time.

I'm also setting up a customer only blog in which all new updates will go. It's nearly finished. Once I have it done, all my customers will be getting an invite.

When the videos are done, I'll be posting them to the blog and sending out notification that they're ready. There will also be customer support right from the blog that's all in one place.

      Hope this helps...

I appreciate the purchase... Updates are coming.

      Thanks,

    Thanks again Derek,
I got it wrong, and you are right we can not use GCT for subID.

    What I want to do:
    1. track which keyword is converting.
    2. I want to track Search network on all: Google, yahoo, bing
    3. I want to track content network also in all three: G, Y, Bing
    4. cloak the affiliate links
    5. identify sites for placement targeting after running content campaign
    6. work nicely with adwords editor: what are the extra steps?

    7. I want to focus on cpa networks for now. But if I want to enter clickbank and CJ in future, does Prosper202 does all the above.

    For these do I need:
    1. ONLY prosper202
    2. prosper202 + GCT.

    Thanks.

      Hey Angel Man,

      You're welcome...

I can tell you right now if you want to use the big 3 search engines and cloak your affiliate links, Prosper202 is the best way to do it. It'll cover 1 - 5 above no problems.

As far as Adwords Editor and Prosper202 you already have my videos so you know how I explain tracking Content Network campaigns. You'll just need to pay attention to which links go with which ads and which ad groups. So you have to pay a bit of attention when setting up your content network campaigns in Adwords Editor, really not a big deal, but takes some effort.

With the GCT code you don't have to worry about that because it's all cookie based so you'll get the info in the reports you pull, making it easier to setup your campaigns with Adwords Editor.

The downside to the GCT code is you have to get that code placed on the thank you page, very often much easier said than done. And that doesn't even cover Yahoo and Bing yet.

Even if you want to use a tracking pixel or postback URL (my favorite), you can use just one universal tracking pixel from Prosper202 and it covers all your tracking needs not just the Big G. Which seems like the better deal to me.

Prosper202 will work with any affiliate Network that has a Sub Id tracking system which Clickbank and CJ both have. And even if they don't have a Sub Id tracking system you can use the tracking pixel or post back URL if you can get them placed on the thank you page. Even product owners can track their campaigns using the tracking pixel.

So Prosper202 seems to be the better choice for everything your trying to track. Feel FREE to use Big G, Yahoo, and Bing tracking pixels if you like, but they aren't necessary.

      Hope that helps out...

      Thanks,

      Hey kkchoon,

You can probably use Affiliate Prophet to handle that. It's designed for Clickbank tracking.

It works based on your landing page, not a tracking link, which has some big advantages.

I think since it's not designed specifically for SEO, it's not the perfect solution but will give you some details of where your traffic is coming from and what's converting. Especially if you have a lot of backlinks, articles and Web 2.0 properties sending you targeted visitors.

For the actual search engine results it provides the search engine used and the keyword searched for.

I have searches from Bing, Yahoo, Google and many flavors of Google with keywords searched for... It all shows up in Affiliate Prophet for my campaigns.

Will probably work well for you.

      Hope that helps...

        Hi Derek,

Thanks for the information! I had Affiliate Prophet, just like you said, it is not design for SEO, that's why I'm looking for some better tracking tools...

May be I should hire someone to create a custom script since no suitable product out there.

          Hey Kok Choon,

          You're welcome...

While it's not designed for SEO, it does the best job I've seen allowing you to know where your conversions are coming from... I use it for my SEO conversions.

So what kind of features are you looking for? If you provide some specifics I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Another option might be Piwik Analytics... They have a cool API / Widget feature where you can have plug-ins and Widgets custom built.

You might be able to get a programmer to add the features you want to that existing architecture. I use it for my analytics and it's pretty decent. Not as good as the Big G analytics, but I own my data and the idea I can get custom Widgets and Plug-ins built out to give me functionality beyond anything available is really appealing.

It's also a great starting point so you don't have to start from scratch.

          Just a thought...

Hi Derek, thanks for the suggestion, I will try it out...

Basically, I need a simple script to track organic search terms, and place a cookie on each visitors, and generate clickbank or other CPA tracking code, and when the visitor click on affiliate link, it will be able to track which organic keyword triggered the purchase!

I know this is a simple script, but can't find similar function on many tracking tools. Do you happen to know any?

              Hey Kok Choon,

If that's all you need, then you already have the script to do it. Affiliate Prophet does that.

It actually does a decent job too.

It cookies each visitor based on search term and search engine and you can add a Sub Id to your affiliate links automagically and track which search terms and search engines are making your sales based on that Sub Id.

If you can get a tracking pixel on the affiliate offer thank you page, then you can automate the process otherwise you'll need to pull a Sub Id report from each affiliate network and update AP with the converted Sub Ids.

It'll do what you want. I don't know of any others that do that.

Another option is to use Piwik analytics and have the features you want designed and added for you by a programmer.

    Derek,
Thanks for patiently clarifying the things. I have to review the videos again.

another question: for Landing page split testing which one do you use?
I am thinking of google website optimizer.
The part I didn't understand is: It says we need original LP, testing LP; thank you page.

For cpa offers again, I can set up LP1 and LP2, this third page sounds like merchant's page as in GCT? confused? would you clarify ?

    Thanks.

I like it because I can split test 3 different pages at the same time and I get all the advantages of either Prosper202, Tracking202 or Tracking202 Pro and the AIDA numbers on a per page, keyword, etc basis. As well as some other cool features like pulling which words, countries, and other specifics used have the best AIDA numbers and other cool stuff like that.

It really helps when you're trying to figure out what your market is thinking and what problems they need solved, where your message is working best, and those kinds of things.

It's also nice because you can get killer market info without having to wait for 30 conversions (typical industry standard), the AIDA numbers will tell the story for you saving a huge amount of time and money.

I haven't used the Multi-variate / Tugachi tester in AP yet, but will be soon. It comes with the Pro version of AP along with a few other cool features.

As far as the Big G Optimizer I don't use it, but have taken a look at it a few times. My understanding is exactly like yours, it's designed for product owners who have control of the entire sales process. While you can use it for affiliate marketing if you can get the code added to the Thank you / Order Confirmation page, it's usually much easier said then done.

The reason they do that is to be able to tell you which page is getting the conversions. You setup the Optimizer and start sending Targeted Visitors to it. It'll send half your visitors to one page and half to the other. The only way to know which page is converting best is if you have some code on the Thank You page... This is because it'll send a unique ID for each page and when some one orders, they land on the thank you page it can tell which landing page sent the visitor.

The one place the Big G Optimizer can work for you is Squeeze pages if you have a thank you page, since you own that entire process. So if you're building a list, and you should be, you can use the Big G Optimizer to help with that.

There is other split testing software available... Some FREE and some have a cost. You might want to do a little research and see if something can work for you.

I hope that helps out some...

I know it can be confusing how some of this stuff works.

      Thanks,

      Derek

    Again thanks Derek,
I was thinking the same. We could use GWO for opt-in pages.

Prosper202 site has script: Prosper202 Self Hosted Apps

    Did you use it?

    Thanks.

      Hey Angel Man,

      You're welcome...

No, I don't use that script. Often times visitors return so I want some assurance that they will see the same landing page they saw the first time. That makes their experience much better which is good for business.

So I use scripts that are a little more sophisticated. Plus I like to have much more information provided so I can make better decisions much faster.

Feel free to give it a test.

      Thanks,

      Derek
