Getting backlinks naturally through blogging doesn't work. What is your experience?

Hi Guys
We have been running a few sites and we write really in-depth (about 2,500 words per post), engaging blog posts.

Here is our process:
1. We research the most popular topics
2. We look at the top 3 guys in Google for that topic. Then we try to write an even better blog post and optimize that topic for SEO (we focus on the user first).
3. Next we post on our social media accounts.

So now we are just sitting back and waiting to get others to "naturally" link to these. But when checking tools like ahrefs we can see that nobody links back to our blog posts (not even one although we have posted over 30 so far over the year).

Some blog posts generates 2,000-3000 organic visitors per month. But without any backlinks and social shares. However most post get just 10 visitors per month....

What are the gurus doing that we are missing? Most sites just say write great content and ppl link to you. It looks good on the paper but in reality that propaganda doesnt seem to work.

So what are we missing? How can we get more backlinks naturally to our blog posts?

Cheers
Chloe

In my opinion, you need to have grown your website to a certain stage, to have gotten your own audience, before really expecting any backlinks. Then other sites can link to your site because you have started building your authority in your niche.

To get a backlink fast, then do a guest blog on an authority site, since you said you do really in-depth engaging content, getting a guest blog shouldn't be too difficult.

So getting backlinks through blogging still works, but you need to have made your place some to get those.

If you use social meia properly though, especially Twitter, you should be able to get some retweets for your post on your social media accounts, especially if you do the same for other non-competitor accounts.

People don't just link to your content magically. In most niches, 99% of your traffic doesn't even own a website to link back to you even if they wanted to.

The whole idea of just writing great content and you will get links "naturally" is total BS, as you are seeing.

You have to beg, barter, or buy links from people.

Agree, because people genuinely don't like to link to others seeing that as bad karma.

Look at reciprocal links. Some Directories would offer free listing and yet people would
go away or delete links immediately after inclusion in Directory index.

Using a directory like one of those was a stupid idea in the first place. All of them were filled with spam.

I agree with Ryan here. Being generous can mean asking people that you genuinely like and admire to write a post for you. Or you feature then on your blog. You can even feature comments from your readers. When you make the first move, people often reciprocate.

So Getting backlinks naturally through blogging works but it takes little time.

The genuine content take time to get rank but you will get the best results.

    Thanks

What you're doing is not wrong and is basic stuff. you need to start doing more guest blogging and outreach. Write good quality lengthy content and create an outreach campaign to reach out to good authority sites and ask them for a link back. Again, make sure that your content is top-notch in quality.
Also, reach out to niche-related websites and ask them if you can Guest blog for them. This process will provide you with good organic backlinks.

First make your website popular up to some extent. Contact people of your niche and engage with them to promote your brand. Make the social presence of your website. Then automatically you'll get what you want.

Nobody want to post the articles on their social pages. Perhaps, users consider your information aren't enough good to post. Did you try to promote your articles using linkbuiliding? It's easy to leave the link somewhere, when you link is infomartive, If it's not a promotional link.

A lot of it comes down to the topic.

For example some niches like curling just don't have an audience with many webmasters. Some niches like copywriting have a host of people with websites but they will absolutely not link to anyone who they perceive as a direct or indirect competitor. While some topics like tech will usually only link out to big name authority sites.

One particular type of content that gets links is research and studies. The problem is that these take up a lot of time and effort to put together. And there is no guarantee the research will get enough reach to people who would potentially link back.

Almost everyone is facing the same challenge you are facing. Even with good content.

I've never intentionally tried to build links and I get over 100k page views monthly on my blog. I just write engaging content and let everything else work itself out. That strategy has worked for me. If I was going to build links, I would do guest posting.

Seems like you're writing good enough articles. the length seems good too. but the strategy seems lacking. You need to sit and wait less, and go ahead and do outreaching more. Outreach to good authority sites in your niche, and ask them to link back to you. Plus, you also need to strategise and come up with a good Guest Blogging routine too.
As far as your current plan is concerned, you'll get fruits too. Just have to be patient.

What is your website authority rank? People will not link your blog until you have a brand name and really good authorty. Those things work for moz and backlinko because these websites have certain Authority and are publishing research blogs. They are sharing unique content which is the result of Experimentation they are doing on their network to increase traffic. So before going for this Link Bait Technique you need to have a authority website so that people will Recommend othere.

What is your social media strategy? It's no good just posting to social media if you don't have an effective strategy (this means networking with influencers and gaining a following of ENGAGED users).

The fact that you are searching pre-written articles in your niche and then just rehashing them gives me pause for concern.

Why would anyone link to content that is already out there?

You need to look to create original content - ahead of your ocmpetiotn. Content no one has created before. You can only come up with that if you have geniuine knowledge in your niche and you have gotten to know your audience thoroughly.

Make sure what you are posting is entertaining and spikes emotions - make the title polarising and make the content polarising (and original!). People love to argue, especially online, and it will increase the possibility of getting shares if you ahve UNIQUE polarising content.

  • What your niche is?
When you google the keywords of your articles, do you appear in the first page already?, otherwise you need more backlinks, I think here in Warrior Forum (Im new) you can buy backlinks building services.
As others said social networks are imperative too, you need to automatize the publication to avoid wasting time, I mean things like Buffer or WordPress plugins.

Dont Know the exact reason but facing the same issues too. But as far as i dig to find the alternate is people dont consider that much of word count if the blog is not popular, true you are making a good engaging content but did optimized it so that it look eye catching with some main points high lighted. Think like a user what you'll love and what not? I am not the expert but hope it'll help.

This is what I'm having problems with.
What makes you to believe that blogs would keep content of post including link intact?
Granted BFS (Build For Spam) blogs would let any piece of crap to be added unedited
but self-respectable blogs would remove link or turn it to text making post virtually useless.

How much time does it take to make 1 post? 5 - 10 minutes?
Does it pays to invest all that time to get maybe 5 links of 50 maybe questionable blogs
and how long it will take to build enough backlinks to affect your SERP standing?

      Inquiry mind wants to know.

Don't just sit back and wait for backlinks! It's total stupidity this competitive era. No one is going to link you if you aren't a Big name in the industry. Create backlinks, do social advertising, offer guest posts, do competitor research and find out their backlinks and try to get links from those sites. When you will be able to make your website popular in the industry, make a big name and fame for your business, people would love to link you. You have to work hard to grow up first, there is no one to pull you up, you have to try yourself first.

    Thanks,
