Will foreign web host effect SEO?

I am in the USA but considering starting a Wordpress blog site using a web host in Iceland. This is because I will be posting controversial content that could possibly be censored by the USA authorities one day and Iceland has a reputation for protecting free speech. My question is, will this have any effect on SEO? My target readership will be primarily US residents.

Another consideration is the domain extension. Will it make any difference regarding SEO, if I use a .com domain or an .is (Iceland) domain? I am told by the web hosting company in Iceland that it is easier for the US authorities to block .com domains but if the .is domain is going to negatively effect my SE rankings, making the site more difficult to find, then maybe it's best to go with a .com address. Or perhaps I could use both a .com and a .is domain with the same name.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Just ensure your hosting IP is U.S. That way you stand a better chance of ranking in Google.com and enjoy more U.S traffic.

Hosting can't effect your SEO, Try to use Dedicated IP (USA IP).

  • Yes, a US IP solves the issue, if you want to rank in the USA. But regardless, your hosting do not have an effect in the SEO of your site.

Yes, where and with whom a site is hosted could affect SEO. Hosting always has an effect on SEO (site speed, down-time, etc.). The TLD has nothing to do with SEO but could affect clicks and repeat visits (people always remember sites as being .com, whether they really are or not).

Maybe I missed something in the news; though, are we in danger of having our free speech rights taken away in the USA?

Article 5 of the U.S. Constitution makes that pretty impossible. 2/3 of the House AND 2/3 of the Senate must agree to propose an amendment to the Constitution and then 3/4 of the state legislatures have to ratify it (or congress can be left out entirely and it can be proposed by 2/3 of state legislatures and then ratified by 3/4 of them).

Seriously, have you been paying attention? The knuckleheads that represent us can barely get a simple majority to approve things!

And, of course, if your prediction of the elimination of free speech ever did come to fruition, what makes you think that hosting content on a server in Iceland would solve anything? They could just as easily block content emanating from that server, as well.

Make sure your hosting IP is U.S. that will help you get better ranking in Google US as well as your website's page load speed is increased for USA traffic.

It won't affect your SEO if you choose the hosting provider outside of your country. People consider buying hosting from their own country that the latency and loading speed will be good for local users. The most important thing is choosing a reliable web hosting provider.

  • Forget about that myth. It won't effect your seo. It may only cause some difficulties accesing your website from different countries, if you use bad hoster.

Hosting only affects seo on speed when opening a site.

If the site is quickly opened in 3 seconds, your website will be superior to sites that are opened in 15 seconds.

Sounds like you are getting ready to do something illegal, so just remember, if you are, then where you host does not matter, since you are in the US, then it would be easier to find and arrest you.

Don't worry about hosting or IP location - it's not a ranking factor. I have a site in a quite competitive niche that got on the first page on Google in just a couple of months though it is hosted outside US.

If you have a blazing fast host, I don't think it will affect the SEO of your website if your website is hosted on the North Pole.

Speed - very important in terms of SEO.
    Location - is not important.

If the host rocks you will be A-OK. Wherever the host, hosts. But if servers lag then you may run into trouble. All about the hosting company itself, independent of the location.

Anyone who says your host does not affect seo, is a clueless fool.

Iceland can shut you down as quick as anyone.

Anyone who is worried about being shutdown....is not worried about seo to begin with.

Get your site chinese or russian hosted. Then you have no worries...

Oh wait! I'll bet the same loons above will tell you to stay away from russia, china, pakistan, turkey,...

You people are so misguided...you just keep parroting the same crap and misinformation:
ip anywhere is fine, webhost doesn't matter, yada yada yada...

    You people are TOTALLY clueless!

You don't need to worry about the location of your hosting server if you are using webmaster tools to set your geo-targeting. But the location of the server hosting your website has a direct effect on the loading speed of your website. So if you want to use a hosting server from Iceland, the best solution is to use a CDN (Content Delivery Network) with your web hosting.

Right, that's because you're directing G. to audience in specific Geo-location, but...
if you 1 in a few billions of users who care less about G. or SERP and the rest of
mambo-jumbo, then site's SERP have nothing to do with where it's hosted.

Speed have nothing to do with where site is hosted as well but rather with servers
and it's power, bandwidth bottleneck, time of the day and dozens more factors.

So you know. When you Google for some info, as a rule G. will provide you with
information based on YOUR IP address and not where some site has been hosted.

If you in Iceland, site about Iceland is hosted in States, Google will place that site
up in SERP because of your location and not where hosting server is.

You are mixing a whole lof of crapola up.

If you have a french website, targeting people in france, guess what.

You dang better have a site hosted in france....

If you want to get zero traffic, get it hosted in countries like turkey, iran, pakistan,...

You obviously don't know a whole lot about the internet.

Webhosts have data centers in various places. They all have different speeds.

You can choose a host, pick a data center that has the fastest speed that is nearest to your targeted audience.

Your host, and their location makes a huge difference.

You think a site like amazon just leaves it to the wind?
Companies like amazon choose to do things the right way.
They have to. They have domains and sites hosted in various countries for this reason

They do not send UK customers to amazon.com hosted in the US.

Run with the big dogs or stay on the porch.

        Learn or die a fool.

An IP in the U.S. should suit you well if this is going to be your concern. Your load speed will be better all around.
